June 12, 2018: Throwing Them A Bone

posted in: Cubs | 1

They were bound to beat us one of these games.  After breaking their hearts in the first game of the series, it was 8 out of 9 in the season series.  It was nice of us, you know, throwing them a bone.  Every dog has its day.

They are dogs by the way; they won’t last.  Even if they do, best case for them is wild card.  They might as well forget about the division.  The Cubs are coming, and we’re not going anywhere.

In the first game, they had us.  With their awesome bullpen, holding a one run lead would be easy.  Heck, I don’t think the Brewers had lost a game when Hader pitches.  Well, Jason Heyward had other ideas.

Yes, that Jason Heyward.  I’d pretty much given up on him.  A million dollar platoon player who’s really good at defense.  Well, he’s playing better than he has his entire Cubs career.  When Heyward came up against Hader, I wasn’t wondering why Maddon didn’t pinch hit for him like JD said, like I did the other night against the Phillies.  No, lefty or righty, I felt he would do well against any pitcher.  It may be blasphemous to say, but at this very moment, I don’t think I’d have preferred Kris Bryant over Heyward.  Yeah, it’s like that.  Heyward singled to tie the game.

So if he continues to hit like this, how much scarier does that make the Cubs?  Yes, KB is struggling in the midst of his longest HR drought, but he is still doing OK, and we know he’ll be back.  Rizzo is Rizzo again.  That 4th deck foul ball on Monday night was one of the longest I’ve seen.  Of course, he came back in the 11th and crushed one…fair this time.  Then Heyward again…  The Cubs were back in first place, where they belong.

And one night later, they’re back in 2nd.  Ok, ok, I’ll give credit where it’s due.  Chase Anderson pitched a good ball game.  And Tyler Chatwood…  Well, I thought with him pitching on the road, he’d feel a little less pressure, but then it isn’t called Wrigley Field North for nothing.  Maybe we need to be a little further away from home.  Or maybe Chatwood just can’t get his act together.  His numbers away from Coors were very good…good enough to take a shot at him in the offseason.  Maybe best case, a little wilder Arrieta, with great movement on his pitches; he does kind of look like him at first glance…ok, my son confused him for him at the start of the year.  He knows better now; we all do.

But he wasn’t replacing Jake; Yu will be back soon.  He was replacing Lackey; didn’t think it could be worse.  Get Lackey back?  Nah.  Keep Monty in the rotation?  Maybe.  Make a move?  You never know.  Or maybe Chatty will turn it around.  He is the 5th starter…

But back to the Brewers.  Rubber match tomorrow; my money is on the Cubs.  The next time we will see them is in 2 months.  The standings may look much different then.  But for now, we’re neck and neck.  We need to take care of business, and knowing how we’re in their heads, I expect it.  Go Cubs!

The brewcrew need all the bones the Cubs can give them. Am I underestimating them? Maybe. But I remember last year’s second half as well as 8 out of 10 so far this year. The Cubs bats were out to sleep in game 2 after their extra inning outburst the night before. JHey sure has been a surprise so far this year. Rizzo struggled early but has been coming on. KB has been consistently good this year, although currently slumping and in a home run drought. Javy has been great. As for the pitching, chatwood has been wild and disappointing. There is still time to come around. Monty has been great and is really making a case to stay in the rotation. Yu is still a question mark until he gets healthy. The rubber match to this series to come. Who will win? At the end of the day, it means more to the brewcrew. Toss those dogs another bone! GO CUBS GO!!!
