June 3, 2018: Queens Sweep

posted in: Cubs | 0

That was a fun weekend for the Cubs.  A 4 game sweep of the Mets in New York was a beautiful thing.  What did we learn?

The Mets aren’t very good; I guess we can start there.  Remember when the Mets beat us in 2015?  Yeah, I can talk about that pretty easily since we won it all the following year.  I rooted like hell for the Royals that year though, and they did not disappoint.  As for the Mets, that must seem like an eternity ago.  With Cub killer Daniel Murphy sitting on the DL in Washington, and Matt Harvey pitching like half of himself in Cincinnati, and David Wright donezo, and now Thor on the DL, and… I can go on.  This Mets team with all the changes and injuries just isn’t very good.  Their best hitter is some guy named Nimmo… pronounced like Finding Nemo.  Yeah, like I said, it was a fun series.

But like I always say, we have to beat who is on the schedule, and that isn’t easy, no matter who the opposition is.  That’s why you play the games, and the Cubs did play those games, and played them well.  First it was Quintana pitching a nice game and Zobrist going deep.  Nice to see from Jose and man, has Ben been playing well.  Game 2 wasn’t that easy.  Trailing 2-0 going into the 7th, apparently wasting a much needed decent outing from Chatwood, the Cubs bats finally awoke.  Schwarby was in the middle of this comeback.  Coming off the bench, going deep, and driving in four led us to the 2nd straight win.

It felt good, heading into the third game of the series, against their best pitcher, with our 6th starter on the mound, having won the first two games of the series.  And wouldn’t you know it?  Our 6th starter matched their number one starter pitch for pitch.  It was a 1-1 game after the first 9 innings were played.  I watched from about the 8th on… What a nice game by the Farrell kid.

The one thing I couldn’t understand, and from reading Twitter, a lot of people didn’t get, was why Joe didn’t pinch hit for him in the top of the 13th when the Cubs were threatening with only 1 out.  Well, of course he didn’t do that because he was setting up the 14th inning six run explosion.  AA came through in a big way, before Zobrist made another appearance, and Baez took a pitch chin high out of there.  Where was that the whole game?  We’ll take it though…

And that set up the Queens sweep…  Another game in which the starting pitching was good (Lester) and the bats were struggling.  There are other ways to score runs besides hitting the ball out of the park you know.  We stole this game from the Mets, literally.  Baez showed us again why he is one of the most exciting players in baseball when he stole home once Matz made a pickoff throw to 1B.  It was perfect.  And then with Contreras scoring on a not so deep sac fly… I love the energy these guys play with.

4 in a row… 6 out of 7 on the road trip… season high 10 games above 500… only 2 games back of the Brewers (thanks White Sox)… yeah, just past the first third of the season, and things are starting to come together… a whole lot earlier than last year.  Let’s go Cubs!
