And so it begins… After our team’s roster was completed last week, we set our weekly practice time. This Friday was our first official team practice.
It wasn’t a bad turn out either… for the beginning of a 3 day weekend and all. I did have a couple people reach out and tell me their kids wouldn’t be in attendance. I’m OK with that. That’s all I really ask; just let me know either way. Then of course we had some no shows… no call no show. Yeah, well…
But then there was a whole bunch of kids who did show up. I don’t sit there and map out a practice plan, but based on my experience last year, I have a pretty good idea of what I want to accomplish each and every week. First off, trying to keep these kids’ attention. That’s impossible, I know. But if I can get them to listen & pay attention most of the time, I’m happy. It’s important, especially when they take the field, to watch the ball. We worked on that.
Before that, we practiced playing catch. For now, throwing grounders works. This is most of what we’ll see this year anyways. Fielding groundballs, turning their mitts the right way is a good starting point. Next is running the bases. Making sure that everybody knows where to run is critical, obviously. Still, we’ll have one kid miss it… we did on this Friday. That’s OK too.

After the groundballs and running bases, now we lined the kids up. I threw groundballs to each of them, and, and… they have to throw to 1st base. This is a key, that I didn’t realize early last year. We spent all year getting this concept through to the kids, so we’re getting a bit of a head start this year. It worked well. Most kids can’t reach it, and most kids can’t catch it at first base, but it’s the concept that is important. Each kid got a groundball, threw to first, then went to first to catch the next kid’s throw. It worked relatively well.
Next up was the easy part; hitting. Everybody wants to hit. We practiced off the tee in our first practice; didn’t have time to pitch to all of them. We’ll definitely squeeze that in next week, our last practice before Opening Day. The hitters aren’t the problem in this drill; it’s the fielders. Yep, we’ve already had our kids sitting down, playing with the grass or dirt, not having their gloves on. It’s always a work in progress. Again, the simple point of keeping your eyes on the ball, because maybe, just maybe it may get hit your way. One of our kids actually did hit a line drive that almost hit this kid in the head. It happened to my son last year. He actually did react pretty well to it, but it deflected off his glove and hit his cheek. Always trying to keep the kids safe out there.
After practice, a couple kids hung around with my son. We played for over an hour. I loved it. They all got to hit pitching, and have a lot of fun to boot. That’s what it’s all about anyways. One more practice before Opening Day. Go Cubs!
