May 24, 2018: Anthem Talk

posted in: Bears | 0

As the news broke about the NFLs new anthem rule, my head hurt.  Great… now I have to listen to all this back and forth about everybody and all their correct opinions.  Yeah, and now I’m going to talk about it.

Just play ball.  I guess that’s where I’ll start.  I watch the NFL, more specifically, the Bears to get away from the every day BS.  I don’t want to see political statements/protests interrupting my precious football action.  There’s a time and a place for everything right.  Kind of like all these sports talk shows that were now forced to talk about this new rule.  Again, tell me again how this is about sports…  When I tune into a game, in any sport, to watch my teams, I want to watch them play.  Period.  I guess that is my simplest point.

Are there things wrong in this world?  Are there things wrong in this country?  Double yes.  Double hell yes.  Does kneeling during the national anthem bring attention to these specific issues?  It brings attention that’s for sure.  There are strong feelings on both side of the fence.  Kneeling during the anthem is a silent form of protest, which is a form of freedom which this country is all about.  Why can’t they do it?  Kneeling during the anthem is perceived by many as disrespecting the country which allowed you to make all that money.  Why choose to protest at that specific time?

I mentioned a key word here, and that’s money.  Isn’t that what it’s all about?  Why did the NFL make this rule?  Because they perceived that this whole controversy caused them to take a hit to their bottom line.  So, by eliminating this controversy, they hope to win back some fans.  First off, they didn’t eliminate it; they just made it all worse.  Secondly, who has stopped watching the NFL because of your opinion on this issue?  A handful of folks on Facebook or Twitter whose posts have went viral?  Give me a break.  The NFL is king… still… regardless of what hit they took to the bottom line.  People are tuning in to watch the NFL for their teams, their favorite players, their fantasy teams, and their sports wagers.  Forget about this crap.

Then again, the president may have made the call into the NFL… as if there aren’t more serious issues to be concerned with… to force this to happen… to make this appear as a win for him.  All this does is force more division in this country; he’s good for that.  Heck, this topic even veterans, that fought for this country, not like Trump, are split about.  How does this make anything better?

Hey, I wouldn’t kneel during the anthem; that’s me.  Should anybody kneel during the anthem?  I don’t think so; that’s MY opinion… doesn’t make it right.  What’s the best way to go about making a difference in this country?  What’s the best way to make change?  What’s the best way to use your platform, your popularity, your influence to promote positive change?  I don’t have all these answers.  I don’t think there is one right or one wrong answer.  This is the land of the free correct?

I love my country, does that mean my blood boils when folks make a decision to peacefully protest?  I think America with all of our faults, is great… it was great before somebody tried to make us great again.  I’m not falling for that crap.  And yet even though this is a great country, we still have ways to go in some areas.  How and where do we start making progress on this stuff?  Look in the mirror; start there.  What can you do to make a difference?  What can you do to make this country better?  And go out and do it!  Easier said than done, I know.  And I know, wherever you stand on this anthem talk is neither here nor there.  Stop F-ing with my football and good luck to us all!
