May 22, 2018: When Losing Doesn’t Matter

Who was lucky enough to catch that Cubs Indians game Tuesday night?  Who was lucky enough to be there?  I was.

It was an auction at my son’s school where I acquired these Cubs tickets for May 22, 2018 vs the Indians; the Cubs cap umbrella night!  It was also the first time Cleveland returned to Wrigley since Game 5 of the World Series.  I would wear my Cubs hat with the 2016 trophy on it for the event.

I worked from home so that we could be there nice and early.  My wife dropped us off at Wrigley about 330pm.  The gates would open at 4pm, which was 2 hours earlier than the 6pm earlier start time.  The pushed up start time for national TV was nice, considering that my son would be up way past his bedtime on this school night.  The first thing we did when we arrived was play some catch.

I love playing catch with my son, especially this year.  From the age of 5 to 6, he’s gotten so much better.  He likes when I throw him pop ups.  We played for about a half and hour, right up until they started letting folks in.  We had to get our umbrellas after all, and see some BP.

We scored the umbrellas, and made our way to the field, hoping to stand somewhere up the 3rd baseline, hoping to catch a batting practice ball gone foul.  But, you can’t do that any more.  You must have tickets in that section to walk up to the field; that’s BS.  I was told it was a security concern.  I was a bit pissed.  They do have a kids corral on the field, which is pretty cool, but it was already at capacity, plus, there would be no Cubs coming over to that section.  The kids can get on the field, watch the Indians take BP, and maybe get an Indians player autograph; no thanks.

So it was nacho time.  I told my son I’d get them only if he had more than the 1 chip he had the last time I got nachos; I got them, and he did.  Then he wanted to try cotton candy.  He had never tried it before; he did on this night.  He didn’t love it, but he did finish a chunk.  Then he got tired…

I had to wake him up though.  If I let him sleep the whole game, he would never get to sleep this evening.  So I did, and we started walking.  The game on the field was already in the gutter; down 7-0 didn’t look promising.  We hit a few stores then ended up in the 200 section, grabbing some empty seats.  Our seats were awesome; they were 3rd row in the 400 level.  But, we wouldn’t go back there on this evening.

After sitting there for a half an inning, we continued our walk around the park; this time towards the bleachers.  Normally, I don’t think they let you in there, but they did.  As we turned the corner in left field, we came up to the Cubs bullpen.  I told him to look in, since the electric shade on the window was closed most of the way.  So he squatted down and peeked in; then the light came on.  He got up and wanted to keep walking.  As we walked away, the bullpen door popped open.  It was Carl Edwards Jr.  He had a ball for my son.  I thanked him, as he quickly dipped back into the bullpen.  My son was frozen.  This made his night.  This made my night.

We then went to sit in the bleachers for a half an inning.  All the drunks still partying, dancing to YMCA while they showed some kid doing the “floss” dance; my son knows what it is.  He was sitting there wide eyed…

Next up was our walk towards the Cubs dugout, because although I would love to tell you that we would have stood until the very end on this cold, school night, the truth is, we probably wouldn’t have.  We stood on this night because with those 2 tickets that we won, we received a pass to go on the field after the game and take a picture in the Cubs on deck circle.  Very cool.

As was this entire evening… yeah, the score sucked, but I wouldn’t trade the time spent with my boy at this specific game for anything.  All things considered, everything worked out just perfectly.
