May 14, 2018: Making Up

Monday was make up day for the Cubs against the Braves.  Can you believe that the Braves have the best record in the National League?  It is true.  I can’t imagine that would continue…

They do have a pretty good lineup… a pretty good young lineup.  I snatched their star Freddie Freeman in Fantasy Baseball this year.  He’s as solid as they come.  Then you have some new guys coming up.  Albies, Acuna, Swanson, Inciarte… they have some pretty decent talent.  Then they just added Jose Bautista.  Where the heck has he been?  Well, they’ve had a nice season so far, but their pitching is definitely lacking; that’ll be their downfall eventually… like most teams.

Speaking of pitching, Quintana didn’t turn in his best performance in this one.  He got knocked around pretty good.  Watching Eloy kill the ball in the minors is making some people upset about the deal.  Yes, Jose has been solid, even in the postseason, but he hasn’t been awesome.  That’s what we were expecting here, right?  Or, was it really all about being solid, while being on a team friendly deal that had us excited?  I think it was a little of both.  I certainly think he should be pitching better than he is.  I still think he will.  He hasn’t even been with the Cubs for a full year yet.  Remember Lester’s first year?  Yeah, I think he’ll be just fine.  And if he contributes to another World Series title in the next couple years, the trade would be well worth it… kind of like the Chapman-Torres deal.  Kid looks good by the way, but we won with Aroldis, so all is well.

Another pitcher raising some concerns is Yu Darvish.  He hasn’t been good, bottom line.  But, again, I think it’s way too early to cast judgment here.  Yes, neither of these guys has the same pedigree as Lester when he arrived, World Series champion, etc, but can we give them both a little slack since they’re just settling in here?  Sure I expected better things from Yu thus far, but I’m not going to hang him yet.  If this keeps up all year, then talk to me.  Honestly, for whatever reason, I haven’t really seen him pitch too often… oh, maybe that’s because he’s only pitching through the 5th inning… da, da, dum.

Nah, I’m not getting too worked up yet, in general.  The Cubs made a nice push in this game to comeback, and were in perfect position in the 9th.  When Bryant hit that ball, I thought we won.  He really smacked it, but right at the left fielder.  I think I read something about Kris not being clutch… I’m not so sure about that.  I’m sure there are stats out there, but in a big spot, besides Rizzo, my money is on Kris.  Yes, Baez and Zobrist have both come through with big hits in the past; they are not bad options either… it’s nice to have multiple options.  But I’m 100% comfortable with Bryant up in a big spot.  More to come on this discussion.

So now off to Atlanta for the regularly scheduled series.  I’d love to get down to see that new stadium.  Let’s hope the results are better.  Go Cubs!
