May 2, 2018: Messing with the Mojo

posted in: Cubs | 1

It wasn’t like the Cubs have been tearing it up or anything.  Yeah, they had won 5 in a row, but they hadn’t scored more than 3 runs in any of those wins; they were going for some kind of record heading into Tuesday’s game against the Rockies.  But the record didn’t come; the Cubs had lost… again.  I have to always remind myself, that even great teams will lose 63 times this year.

When Joe changed the lineup up before the game, I didn’t really think much of it.  Like I said, we weren’t tearing the cover off the ball or anything like that.  The next morning on talk radio, there were people complaining about it.  I thought to myself, damn, people always have something to complain about.  Yes, it’s because Joe switched the lineup that we lost that game.

At the same time, there is something to be said for messing with the mojo.  So what the runs haven’t been coming in bunches.  The Cubs have been winning… the most they’ve done of that all season long.  So yeah, after second thought, why pick THIS time to change the lineup?  Now I’m one of those complainers…

I know how Joe rolls… we all do.  He likes to mix it up.  He likes to change lineups, move guys around.  I’m cool with that for the most part, I really am.  But, in this particular scenario, I wouldn’t have done it.  Yeah, giving guys a blow… saving them for the long haul… that’s all well and good, but not in the middle of a 5 game winning streak.

Baseball is a superstitious game.  Joe knows about that right?  Didn’t he carry his first major league hat with him everywhere he went?  Didn’t he not shave or change his socks, or whatever during a long streak?  Am I thinking of the wrong guy?  If you’re a die hard Cubs fan, good chance is that you are superstitious too.  I wore that same smelly hat every single game in the playoffs of 2016, watching each and every game (except one) on the couch in front of my TV.  I found a penny after Game 4 of the World Series that I protected like a bar of gold until the Cubs won Game 7, completed the comeback, and made history.   Where is that penny now?

Maybe I’m not as superstitious as I once was.  Maybe now that the last of my teams has climbed the mountain, I’ve eased up on it a bit.  I don’t know… maybe…

It’s easy to say looking back on this lineup change after the loss was recorded.  If the Cubs won that game, would it have even been a subject of discussion?  Yeah, but that’s baseball.  And now the Cubs winning streak is over.  And now it gives ammunition to the folks, who for some strange reason, really dislike Joe.  I really like Joe.  I just didn’t agree with him here.

But I get it… it comes with the territory, especially as the Cubs manager, especially with the talented bunch that Theo and company have put on the field.  Every move gets scrutinized.  It has to get tiring…

But that’s why he makes the big bucks.  You have to take the good with the bad.  You have to ride through the streaks, both good and bad.  It’s a long season.  The Cubs finished April in first place; they’re now 0-1 in May.  Let the games continue.  Go Cubs!

As I said, all good things come to an end eventually, and so did the Cubs 5 game winning streak. So Joe changed the lineup, no biggie for me. Yes, they were in the middle of a winning streak but so what. His lineup juggle had no bearing on the result in my eyes. Yes, there are times to not mess with the lineup, but this is what Joe does. If the Cubs won, nothing would have been said about it. The Cubs, Joe, and every single player is under a microscope. Everything and anything can and will be scrutinized. That’s the name of the game. As far as superstitions go, I have been and still am. Certain hats, certain jerseys, same seat on the couch, volume at a certain level, shot before a game, type of beer…you name it, I do it…hahaha. I do not think that has or will let up even though the Cubs won one finally. Imagine a Bears run? So Joe juggled the lineup and the Cubs lost. Not gonna be the last time this year…for both. A streak in the wrong direction coming? GO CUBS GO!!!
