April 26, 2018: Roquan the Chef

posted in: Bears | 1

I haven’t always watched the draft, but I can’t remember the last time I didn’t.  I got home pretty much on time from work on Thursday, so was able to get a normal evening in… and prepare to watch the Bears select their first round pick.

I’m glad we didn’t have to worry about selecting a QB.  With Trubisky, it looks like we’re set for a while… whew!  I’ve wrote about how upset I was when they made that move last year… to move up one spot to grab him.  I thought it was too much to give up to only move up one spot.  I didn’t think the 49ers would take one anyways.  I had no clue the Bears were going to do that.  I’m not sure which part made me more upset, but looking back, at this point, I’m happy I was wrong… whatever the reason.  With all these marginal QBs going early, I was glad not to be a part of that.

All along it sounded like we were going to get Quentin Nelson from ND.  It wasn’t the sexy pick; how can an OG be sexy?  Yet, it would have been a rock solid pick, especially with this guy being talked of so highly.  To shore up the OL in front of our franchise QB should have been questioned by no one.  It was the safe pick.  I was totally OK with it.

As my son was finishing his bath, I saw he went off the board… to the Colts.  I said, damn.

If the Bears couldn’t get him, I wanted a CB or a pass rusher.  Yet, I really hadn’t paid enough attention to know any off the top of my head.  I did hear about the Ohio State CB, but he was already gone too.  Now what?

Another name I had heard of throughout the week was this LB.  Yes, of course Chubb, who was gone already, but another guy… from the same school we picked up another guy a couple years back.  Yes, it was Roquan Smith from Georgia.

When I first heard his name, I thought of Raekwon from the Wu Tang Clan.  Roquan the Chef… I like that.  From what I heard about the guy, he was a beast, and although it wasn’t our biggest area of need, adding someone of this caliber… the type of caliber player you should be getting at #8, to an already blossoming defense with a genius for coordinator, couldn’t be a bad thing.  Adding someone at this position, the linebacker position, of course will bring memories of our storied LB past.  For anyone to bring those thoughts, he has to be pretty special.  To join that group, he must be special.

So, as we sat down to watch the Bears pick, I told my son I wanted the Bears to draft Roquan Smith.  He reminded me of some past drafts where I wasn’t so happy with the pick…. I don’t even think he was alive for the McClellin pick.  Anyways, the name I was hoping for was read; I was happy.

And I told my son that we will be going to his first Bears game this year.  Most likely a preseason game, but we’ll be in the house regardless.  I believe what the Bears are doing, including this pick, is very good.  I can’t wait until the season begins.  Bear Down!

Have to agree with Pace and company with this 1st round pick. Yes, nelson was probably the top choice, but when he goes prior to your pick, what do you do? Adjust, and think defense. Cannot beat adding a speed linebacker who was a beast at Georgia. Hopefully, he will be even better than Floyd. He should be able to contribute immediately to an always improving defense that should be the best it has been in years in 2018. With the rest of the draft to come, I’m sure Pace will fill holes as necessary…offensive lineman, wide receiver, etc. Adding to the defensive side of the ball never hurts, especially with someone like Roquan who was the best pick at #8. Great start to the draft Pace! Follow it up in rounds 2-7 and BEAR DOWN!!!
