I’ve got it. I’ve got a 3 tiered plan to solve baseball’s “problem”. All these PPD games in April really sucks.
Now first of all, I don’t think baseball has a problem. I love the 162 game grind, and some years, there are not that many games postponed. There’s still the risk throughout the whole season of ducking and dodging the rain. So, my first response to those folks who are bitching is suck it up.
But, being a person who likes to understand both sides of an argument, I offer a solution… one in which I try to do the impossible, and keep everybody happy.
Number one: Change the season to 154 games. This number has a nice ring because this was the number of games they played in a season prior to 1962, when they changed to 162… coincidence? So taking it back to a level which it was already at, helps keep some of the stats in line. How was the level of complaint back in 1962 when they changed this? Giving these guys 8 more games to set records… I don’t think that would be the biggest gripe anyways. After all, we know the biggest issue is money… the loss of revenue & the impact to player salaries. Why can’t we run those numbers and whatever it comes out to be, split the difference? Is that too much to ask for a fair resolution to this money concern?

Number two: Schedule some double headers. When was the last time double-headers were scheduled? They’re only used today when rescheduling PPD games; I guess there will be a lot this year and/or those extra off days during the year will be burned pretty quickly. Anyways, why not schedule 3 double headers per year on 1 Saturday in June, July, & August? Teams could even run special promotions that day… your ticket would be good for BOTH games… they’d have some entertainment between games. Come on, let’s get creative, and don’t tell me it’d be too much on the players, this isn’t the NBA OK?
Number three: Play 2 series in each team’s Spring Training location. Why not? OK, some teams facilities are not as nice as say the Cubs, but how many people are those teams drawing early in the season besides Opening Day? Fans would make this a tradition to fly down to either Arizona or Florida to watch actual REAL LIVE games, not just exhibition. And that’s not counting all those baseball fans that live there… Heck, those tickets could be sold for premium prices even.
So 8 game reduction, plus 3 games during the double headers, plus 6 games in Spring Training facilities. There, I just saved 17 games. This would allow the “normal” schedule to begin mid-April, and make sure the season ends at the end of September. So take about 2 weeks from the beginning of the season, and 1 week at the end.
What do you think? How do you like the solution? What would you do different? Interested to hear all ideas when I return; I’m about to call the commissioner with mine.

The PPD games do suck this year, but it seems to me that this year is out of the norm. Yes, there are always ppd games, especially in April, but nothing too out of hand. I am not in agreement with changing the season from 162 games to 154…is 8 games, basically 1 week, going to make a difference? I do like the idea of double headers. I think every team should play at least 6 double headers, 1 every month of the season, Apr-Sep, with no team playing more than 8 in a year (5% of total games). Double headers are great and used to take place all the time. Teams are deep enough to be able to handle 1 a month, and I also agree that special promotions should be done for these games. Half price tickets, tickets good for both games, fireworks evenings, food promotions…the list could go on. If playing in April is an issue in some cities due to the weather, I like your idea of playing games at the spring training facilities. The first week of April, games are played in Arizona and/or Florida. The second week, schedule games in domes and/or warm weather cities/teams. Seems like some solutions are out there. What will baseball do about it, if anything? Good luck reaching the commish! HAHAHA.
