I wonder how many people knew about the transition tag… I don’t claim to know the most about the ins and outs of that stuff, but I know my fair share. I know plenty about the franchise tag, but when the Bears put the transition tag on Kyle Fuller a couple weeks back, I had no clue.
I thought they’d be tagging him for sure. The last couple times I thought we should have used the tag we didn’t. Last year, I thought maybe tagging Alshon would be the way to go. I wasn’t devastated to see him go, but thought by keeping him one more year, we’d get another glimpse at his health, which was the biggest downfall with him. We didn’t, he did stay healthy, and oh yeah, he won a Super Bowl. Some years back I thought we should have used it on Cutler. That wasn’t my first choice. I wanted him gone, but if given the option between a one year tag deal vs the long term deal we chose… that was a huge blunder.
Tagging Kyle would have been a lot like tagging Alshon; this was his first full year healthy. The year before he claimed he was still not 100%. We saw what he did when he was healthy. He had a very nice year. Or, or, was this just a guy trying to get paid, and stepping up his performance in his contract year? I liked when we drafter Fuller. I know some people would have rather went a different route, like the safety that Green Bay took. But I was OK with Kyle, and he actually had a very good rookie year I thought. It was pretty much down hill after that, of course with injuries contributing. But last year, he was back to who I thought we drafted. He still doesn’t get a lot of picks, but besides 1-2 games last year, he was shutdown on that island.

So the transition tag it was, whatever that means. Well, it means that we get the chance to match any offer Kyle is presented with. And wouldn’t you know, the Packers made him an offer. At that point, I knew we wouldn’t let him go. I wonder if it were another team, would it have mattered…. probably not. I don’t think Kyle was going anywhere… the Bears were just waiting for the market to dictate the deal. Some thought the Packers were effing with the Bears by doing so, and made the Bears pay more than they wanted. I thought it worked out just fine for us. Yes, Kyle certainly did get paid, but if he will be the player we saw last year, he’ll be well worth it.
So another piece officially added to next year’s puzzle. I continue to like what the Bears are doing. Sure, nothing is guaranteed; maybe some of these moves don’t work out. But I think they’re being smart about things for the most part… and that is refreshing. The jury was out on Pace before this offseason, and honestly it still is. We won’t know how smart Pace really is until everything plays itself out, most importantly, how Mitchell is in the next couple years. But I’m not apologizing for being more excited about this upcoming Bears season than I have in a long time… Bear Down!

Tagging Kyle was the smart thing to do. He did have a great rookie year followed up by some injuries. Last year, he returned healthy and played well for the most part. The Bears need some continuity in the secondary, so tagging him made sense. Yes, I think the fudgepack did make an offer to force the Bears hand a bit, but at the end of the day, it does not hurt the Bears. Maybe they overpaid a bit to keep Kyle, but at least he is locked in at corner for a few years. Hopefully, he will play well enough to warrant his new deal. Pace has been making moves, most of which are TBD. His future is in MTru’s arm, in addition to all the other moves he is making. Nothing wrong with that. He is obviously confident in MTru, and we should be, too. A decent rookie campaign will be followed with a sophomore year with more weapons for him to play with…should be interesting and definitely exciting! BEAR DOWN!!!
