March 12, 2018: One of the Best

One of the best pitchers in Cubs history finally made his off season decision; Jake Arrieta will be playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.

We knew it was coming, but still.  It still sucks to see.  Is he worth all that dough?  Who knows, but I do know that he was one hell of a pitcher for us; I think one of the best.

We’ve had some good ones over the years.  Fergie and Maddux are the first guys that come to mind.  Some recent guys like Prior, Wood, and Zambrano all had their moments.  And there are of course all those great Cubs pitchers from back (way back) in the day that nobody knows about like Three Finger and Hippilito.  And of course there are the great closers, like should be HOFer Lee Smith.  But in my lifetime, Jake ranks as one of the best.

The historic 2nd half of 2015, the wild card performance, the no hitters, the World Series wins…yeah, for a minute, HE, not Kershaw, was the best in the major leagues.  It was a small window in the big scheme of things, but big enough of a window to help lead the Cubs to a pretty damn good three year stretch, and oh yeah, that historic World Series title.  I’ll love Jake forever.

He made the best game I attended in person at Wrigley.  I wasn’t lucky enough to go to any postseason Cubs games, but I was there for Jake’s 20th in 2015.  I know, I know, I’m sure it can’t stack up to those postseason games, but as far as regular season games go, it was flat out electric.  We were witnessing history, and the start of something great when it comes to the Cubs.  I will never forget that night.

My wife was with me; Jake was her favorite too, for different reasons than me.  Can’t blame her.  It’s sad that this was announced on her birthday; sorry babe.  I’ll start taking those Pilates classes, and you’ll have your own specimen of a man right here at home…haha.  But seriously, Happy Birthday.  Jake is one of the best, but you are my best.

No love loss for Jake whatsoever for taking this deal, even though the Cubs offered him just as much or more, depending on who you listen to.  Maybe Jake just didn’t want to play with us any more.  It doesn’t make sense to me, but it wasn’t my decision.  I’m not going to hate him for that; no hate file here sorry.  Only love for 49.

So good luck Jake.  Glad you didn’t sign with anybody in our division and/or one of the contenders in the NL.  Enjoy Philly.  Looking forward to the two series against the Phils already because of you.  It’ll be weird to root against you, but it’ll only be for two games.  Thank you for everything you did for us; I’ll miss seeing you pitch every 5th day.  I guess we’ll just have to win another without you…  Go Cubs!

Jake Arrieta to the phillies for 3 years and $75 million. Sure seems like a deal he had to settle with rather than something he actually wanted. The market was not there for him this offseason so he gets “stuck” with this deal. Yeah, I would love to be stuck with a $75 million dollar deal..have to speak to my boss about that one…HAHAHA! Either way, Jake, congrats! You deserve the money and wish you well in philly. Glad it was not with la, nats, red turds, to name a few. Yes, you gave us tons of memories and greatly pitched games! A couple no hitters, a few bombs at the dish, and a World Series W for the Cubs! Definitely no ill will toward you, Jake. Would have rather you stayed but will always have the memories. Enjoy philly…will enjoy smackin you around when we face you. Video tribute at Wrigley to come! GO CUBS GO!!!
