Maybe I should just stop wondering where Jake Arrieta will end up. With the recent signing of Yu Darvish, he most certainly won’t be back here. Still, since he hasn’t signed anywhere yet, he’s still technically a Cub, right?
It’s just crazy that Spring Training is starting and Jake is still without an official team. I’m pretty sure every team in the majors could use his services. However, it also seems like every team in the majors agrees that the 200M price tag is too much. Where do we go from here?
Would Jake sit out the first half of the year, while the contenders sort themselves out, and then sign with a team for the 2nd half/playoff push? I guess that’s one way to go, but don’t we already know the contenders? There will be a surprise or two, but in general, we could probably be pretty accurate with the playoff teams right now. Dodgers, Cubs, Nationals as the division winners, and the wild card teams being the Brewers and the Giants? Out in the AL, not much different. Indians, Yankees, Astros, with the wild card teams being the Red Sox and the Twins?
We can certainly throw many more teams’ names into the chase for the 2 wild card spots, and maybe it’s one of THOSE teams that he’ll go to. Or, maybe he’ll have to come down off that 200M number. Maybe he has already… maybe he still has ways to go.
The honest question is: Are his best days ahead of him? It would be pretty fricking hard to top what he has already accomplished with the Cubs, with the no-hitters, the 2nd half stretch when he was unhittable, the big time wild card game performance, the two World Series victories. Can a team expect all of this when they ink that big time deal?

He’s into all that yoga stuff, helping to keep his body in tip top shape. On the flip side, he was a bit wild this year. Control was definitely an issue, and that is an important issue. Maybe that’s the hesitation right now?
If he changed his asking price from 6 years 200M, to 6 years 150M, I think he’d be signed. Maybe he’s in the 180 neighborhood right now; he has to have lowered his asking price a little bit at this point, no?
Sure feels like he’ll be a “hold out”. At this point, Jake will not start the season with any team. When will this craziness end?
As I’ve said, as long as he doesn’t go to St. Louis or Milwaukee. On a second level, stay out of the National League period. I thought for sure the Yankees or the Red Sox would be on that. Who do the Yankees have? CC? And then the Red Sox… imagine that 1-2 of Sale and Arrieta… oh yeah, throw that #3 Price in there; not too bad.
Jake still has some good mileage left I think. 6 years worth? 200M worth? Those are the questions and the answer is clear. How low will he go? The end results may be upsetting. Go Cubs!

Jake, where is he going to end up? Who is going to put up the kind of money that he wants? It is surprising that he is still a free agent. I mean, spring training has started and he is still available. Does he want too much money? Does he care that he is not signed yet? I know he keeps his body in tip-top shape, but no spring training might lead to injuries down the line? There is no replicating spring training. Him sitting out half a year before signing is certainly an option. If that happens, the Cubs could be in the running for a few month stint, but then the free agency starts over again next year. Is he thinking about retiring? Sitting out a year, or two? Not sure that would be good for his pockets, but who knows. I agree that the end results of any deal with Jake are more and more seeming like it will be upsetting for Cubs fans. At the end of the day, the Cubs can only worry about and control their own team. Best of luck Jake…can’t wait to see a final decision. GO CUBS GO!!!
