Not to be overlooked during Super Bowl week, are the new inductees to the NFL HOF. This year was a bit different; we had one of our own entering in Canton’s doors. Welcome Chicago Bears MLB Brian Urlacher.
I remember when the Bears drafted him. I remember him being a safety at New Mexico. We heard that he was a physical freak… did some punt returning too. Where would we fit in here in Chicago? Regardless of how positive you were on the drafting of this guy, I don’t think anybody could have predicted what happened next.
He ended up in the middle… yeah, that same middle that is somewhat popular here in Chicago. That MLB position… the one that we invented, and perfected. Who knew, we had the next in our historic line of middle linebackers in this kid from New Mexico.
Yeah, he wasn’t exactly the same as the ones before him, just as the defense with Urlacher wasn’t the 85 Bears, but they were special… he was special. Here was a guy who could fly around the field. He could sack a QB, crack a RB, and cover almost anybody. In that Cover 2 zone, he was an absolute beast in the middle. I was really hoping they didn’t screw him; it was so good to see him get in on that first ballot… deservingly so.
To me, Urlacher represents the last of those players… the last of those guys that I’m going to go out and buy their jersey. Once you reach a certain age, and I’m there, there is no more buying shirts with other guys names on there, at least not guys still playing today. The only jerseys I will buying from here on out, if any, are throwbacks, from my heroes.. the players I grew up watching. I’ll save this round of heroes for my son’s collection.
Jordan, Grace, Prior, Butkus, Payton, and Urlacher… that’s the current collection. I remember buying that jersey; actually bought it at Soldier Field before the playoff game against the Eagles in 2001. I wore it that day; I wore it this past Super Bowl Sunday.
We’re about the same age, me and Urlacher. I know he has hair now, but back in the day, we were both big tall, bald white boys; OK, he was in slightly better shape. We would party at the same places back in the day; anybody remember Buzz? We’d see him escorted to the VIP section, while A-Train & David Terrell would hit the dance floor, with Terrell pouring champagne in our glasses; yeah, those were fun times. But there were other cool stories about him too…

My friend, whose son was born premature, and spent weeks at Northwestern hospital, was right next to Urlacher’s lawyer’s son? Don’t remember exactly, but that’s unimportant. The cool thing was what Urlacher did. After talking with his buddy, and seeing this young resident of the hospital next to him for weeks, he left an autographed picture for him, wishing him good health. That meant a ton to my buddy. His son is fine, and I imagine that picture is still in a very safe place. There may have been stories about Urly being an asshole, but there were plenty of others, not as publicized, about the good things that he did.
He was my favorite player to use in Madden. Playing the Cover 2 pinch as my favorite defense, after moving my safeties towards the sidelines before the snap, I would end up controlling 54 in the middle. Loved, loved, loved his game… both in my Madden franchise and on the field with our Bears. How many good memories do you have of Urlacher on the field?
Maybe you remember his early battles with Vick? This fast QB that couldn’t be contained was chased down by THIS LB! Speed vs speed. Or maybe you remember the pick against Favre in frigid Soldier Field that he took to the house? I remember jumping around at our corner bar; awesome! Or maybe the Arizona MNF game sticks out? It does to me; I was there in person. I jokingly questioned if he was on something that game… he was fricking everywhere!!!
Yes, there were a few notable bad moments: the Bus running him over and Brady psyching him out. But, the good far, far outnumbered the bad. The things he did for that defense, what he did for Da Bears on a weekly basis, was priceless. The way they let him go… was a bunch of BS. We could have used his knowledge of the game to transition the next guy; yeah, that wasn’t worth a few million.
Will he be the last Bear to get in for a while? Peanut? Briggs? They were other huge parts of that defense. Hester? He should get in… The Bears already have more players in Canton than any other franchise. After the Lovie Bears, it’s been slim picking… definite drought of great players. But that’s all about to change… we hope!
Until then, until the 2017-2018 season kicks off, we remember the greatness of Urlacher; we’ll always remember it. Brian, after watching every game of your career, you are where I thought you’d be…. and that’s Canton. Welcome 54 and Congratulations! Bear Down!

Urlacher the line backer! Welcome to Canton and congratulations! No way anybody would have thought you would end up there when you were drafted out of new mexico. The Bears definitely found a diamond in the rough…who was responsible for his drafting? He was a huge part of lovie’s cover 2 D for the Bears. It would not have been possible without him. He could do it all…play the run game, defend in the pass game, sack the qb when needed, pick off passes, and cause fumbles. I was not sure he would get in his first year eligible just because rayray was going in, too. I’m glad Urlacher made it. He definitely deserves the honor. His classic game has to be that Monday nighter in Arizona. I was not there, but he WAS all over the field. Him and briggs dominated that game defensively, just as they did many times before. That duo was pretty cool to watch! His time with the Bears ended sourly, but he is going in a Bear, a bald one at that even though he has hair now…hahaha! Thanks for the greatness Urlacher! BEAR DOWN!!!
