September 22, 2014: No Football Sunday

posted in: Bears | 1

Can you believe I didn’t watch one minute of football yesterday?  Can you believe I didn’t watch any highlights?  Well, it’s true, and that usually means one of two things:  a Bears bye week or the Bears on Monday Night Football.

It was definitely weird with no football, although I was periodically checking my fantasy stats.  You have to take these opportunities that only come along a couple times during the NFL season to do things with the family on Sunday…other than footbal, that is.  So that’s exactly what I did.  Here’s how this Sunday was planned, BEFORE my wife knew there was no Bears game this Sunday:

Wife:  I’d like to go to the apple orchard on Sunday

Me:  OK

Wife:  But I know there’s the Bears game and all

Me:  That’s OK

Wife:  Really

Me:  Yeah, of course

Then she finally got smart, and knew better, that it wouldn’t be this easy…

Wife:  When do the Bears play?

Me:  Monday night

And we both laughed hysterically…

Hey, I give her credit for at least thinking about the Bears game.  I love her for that alone.  There are very few times when an actual Bears game is completely missed.  It definitely isn’t my desire to miss a game, but sometimes it just can’t be avoided.  As a matter of fact, I believe our nephew’s christening is next Sunday…. and next Sunday is Bears vs Packers!?!?!  What!?!?!  I need to talk to her brother.  He should know better; he’s a season ticket holder!!!

Well, there are certain things that trump the Bears game if you can believe that… not many, but there are.  Other than those few times, it’s pretty much all Bears throughout the Fall season.  My wife knows (and dreads) that when opening day rolls around that 16 of the next 17 Sundays will have a 3-4 hour window in the middle of the day reserved for the Bears game.  I’d love to watch EVERY Chicago game…. Cubs, Bulls, and Hawks (Sox games for all you Sox fans), but with 162 & 82 games respecitvely in those seasons, it’s almost impossible.  With only 16 precious Bears games each year (hopefully more), they are NOT missed… normally.

So the apple orchard was fun, but it also had a Bears twist.  I made sure I wore my Bears hat, and my son wore his Bears hoodie.  The location of this apple orchard:  Wisconsin.  Yep, heading into enemy territory during football season.  The great thing about it was that we went around noon time, so the Packers were playing (and lost by the way…YES!).  There was very little green and gold walking around because of this.  There definitely no shortage of Bears gear in the orchard.  I started talking to a guy in the orchard who had his Bears shirt and hat on.  We were laughing about the fact that there was very little green and gold, and also about the fact, that if there was, we could bust on them for missing the game… haha.  Yep, there were a few, and I’m sure they painstakingly missed their beloved Cheesturds for a trip to the apple orchard.  For those guys, at least they lost; it’s a lot better to miss a tough loss than a great win.

Now I’m not saying I want the Bears to lose next week, since I will not be watching.  Trust me, I don’t mean that.  I’d love to record the game, and watch when I get home, but then I’d have to turn off my phone from noon until then.  It just ain’t happening.  So I’ll have to bite the bullett on one of the biggest games of the season next year, and that’s OK.  The same way I’m die hard about my teams, I’m die hard about my family.  Still, I don’t like to think about the fact that I’ll be missing the game.

As for tonight, I will NOT be missing it.  It’s always tough playing on Monday night, and coming to work both on Monday and Tuesday.  Today, it’s hard to work, and think about anything other than the game tonight.  On Tuesday, who wants to get up and come to work after a Monday night game?  Nobody, especially if it’s a loss.  If it’s a win, there’s a little extra pep in your step, and you gladly come to work.  You’d gladly do anything after a Bears victory.  Let’s hope we see one tonight…. a tie atop the division is waiting for us!

It’s not that hard to not look at your phone for scores if you are recording a game…unless of course you are with your Brother-in-Law who spoils EVERY sporting event!!!!
