I care for a couple reasons. First off, I’m in the fantasy baseball championship this week. I’m getting doubled up right now, and would need a small miracle to come back and win. So, I’m not going to spend any more time talking about me losing. Secondly, I like the pennant races this time of year. There are some good ones this year, just like the past few. With the addition of the 2nd wild card team, there are more teams that stay in the race longer than before. The final reason, and most important reason, that I’m still paying attention to baseball is because of the Cubs. I enjoy watching them anytime. Whether it be a Saturday day game in June, or a Wednesday night game in September, I’m interested.
Some years are harder than others. The last two in particular have been brutal, but they still get my interest, even if it is a very small piece. This year is better. This year is the final bad year of the rebuilding process. This September, although the Cubs are out of it (again), it is a little more exciting. Each game played not only edges us closer to the end of another losing season, but edges us closer to the start of the 2015 season; that is the exciting part.
Oh yeah, and the Cubs are still playing OK. After ending August with a winning record of 16-14, the Cubs have started September in odd fashion. They swept Milwaukee, got swept by Pittsburgh, got swept by Toronto, lost 2 of 3 to Pittsburgh, and just finished off a sweep of Cincy. All in all, a 7-8 record this month. As the season comes to an end, the Cubs will be playing the Dodgers, Cardinals, and Brewers; all teams in the playoff hunt. The Cubs WILL have a say on how the 2014 playoffs shape up, even though they will not be participating.

In fact, tossing away the last 3 years was almost a necessary evil to achieve what Theo and company set out to do; make the Cubs a consistent contender. Yeah, so they didn’t go all in year 1 or 2 or 3, to try and win a World Series; this may have upset some people. They did it the hard way, the long way, the grueling way… do you think the Cubs would take any other route? Now it’s time to see some results.
So in this last series against Cincinnati, as we watch Rizzo hit a game winning home run, as we watch Soler hit his 1st Wrigley Field home run, as we watch Arrieta flirt with a no-hitter (again!), as we watch Hendricks move his record to 6-2, and as we watch Kris Bryant given the minor league player of the year award, we are watching the future, and that future is now. I’m going to break this down 10 different ways between now and the beginning of next season; I’m going to show you how close the Cubs are, and why next year really could be our year… finally.
So as we watch the final 10 games of the year in another uneventful September in Chicago baseball, realize that this will be the last time for a long time. That’s what I believe and I can’t wait until it’s here. I can’t wait until September baseball turns into October baseball for the Cubs. We have waited all too long… the wait is almost over. Next year is almost here.

That is the exciting part?? Waiting for next season??? You need serious help, really, really, serious help.
BTW, the Cubs have been “positioning” themselves to win a World Series for the last 106 (is that correct?) years, or in which years did they decide not to “position” themselves?? Just because Theo is here now does not mean that all (or any) of his predecessors did not want to “position” themselves to win a World Series.
However, you and I agree that it is time to see some results.
Hopefully, when you refer to this being the last time we will watch baseball in September in Chicago, you meant that it will be the last time it is uneventful.

As far as the 103 years prior to Theo’s arrival, ALL of them have been failures, regardless of the intention/”positioning”. Failures being defined as NO world series titles. At least we knew the intention of Theo and company these past 3 years… and that was, tanking, scrapping, and rebuilding, in an attempt to “position” ourselves for long term success. So we had to sacrifice 3 more years of not winning to see if THIS plan, this latest Cubs plan at attaining a World Series title, comes to fruition… I’m OK with that. They were up front with that, in so many words. Now, that part is over, and THAT is what is exciting. The exciting part is that the Cubs are actually “positioned” to compete for the foreseeable future, starting next year. I think most people can start to see that now… at least I can, but you know, I need help.
