December 21, 2017: Seven Year Itch

posted in: Bears | 1

Go ahead.  Type that title into your Search bar and see what you get.  The seven year itch is a psychological term that suggests that happiness in a relationship declines after around year seven of a marriage.  Ironically, I’m coming up on my 7 year wedding anniversary, but that’s not what this is about.  It’s about the last time the Bears made the playoffs.

If you read on about the seven year itch, it goes on to say it originated as a name for an irritating skin condition; would that be a better description of our relationship with our Bears these past 7 years.  If it was called the 6 year itch, I could have easily related it to the number of our QB during most of this drought; you already know how I feel about him.  But no, it has been 7 years since the last Bears playoff appearance; do you remember it?

We went 11-5 back in 2010, and were still in love with that number 6.  We clinched on that night in Minnesota where Corey Wooten put the stamp on the end of Brett Favre’s career.  I should order myself a Wooten jersey and hang it in my garage when I remodel it just because of this single event.  I thought it was funny that we clinched against Favre in his last year, considering all he had done to us during his career.  Entering the playoffs, we met the Seahawks.  35-24 was the final, but it wasn’t that close.  Seattle scored 21 in the 4th quarter to make it appear to be a non-blowout.  We dominated.  Cutler had 4 total TDs in this game, 2 through the air and 2 on the ground.  I didn’t remember that; had to look that up.  The stage was now set for one of the biggest games in Chicago Bears franchise history.

I’m not going to talk about that game, and what happened, but I will say that from that moment on Cutler was dead to me; the only thing that could have redeemed him in my eyes was to win a Super Bowl.  We never again made the playoffs with Cutler as our QB.  Yes, yes, it wasn’t all his fault, all those non-playoff years, but he was at the head of the line.  Seven years since we made the playoffs?  Damn.

It’s sad if you think about it… if you think about all the other teams who have made the playoffs in that timeframe.  There are only 6 other teams who have not made the playoffs in this span of time.  The Jets, Titans, Bucs, Rams, Browns, and Bills are the list where we are found; not too great of company.  The Rams will actually be breaking their streak this year; then there were only 5 other teams…

I miss playoff football.  This lack of playoff football has brought a feeling of serious dislike for other successful NFL teams.  It’s brought on a general dislike of the NFL, which is hard to imagine.  It’s not because of all the recent stuff that’s been going on… it’s about my team not being any damn good.  We’re about to start another playoff year with no sign of our Bears.

Will next year be the year?  I feel the Cub fan in me… wait until next year.  We’re finally done waiting, but we’ll have to endure another offseason with the Bears, hoping that next year will be the year we finally get back into the postseason.  Will 2018 be the year that we finally scratch that itch?  Bear Down!

7 years since making the playoffs…pretty damn sad. Such a storied nfl franchise that has been this bad for so many years. It is disappointing and frustrating, but more than that is that it pisses me off. Even thinking back to the last time the Bears made it gets the blood boiling. It was the beginning of the end for cuntler, who would never lead the Bears back. Here we sit now, another non-playoff year. Are the Bears any closer? Will they be next year? Like has been the case lately, there are far more questions than answers for our Bears. Another “big” offseason with moves that need to be made. How much longer will we have to endure this? Yes, the ultimate patience of waiting until next year continues. It will be sweet when it ends, but who knows when that will be. 2018 needs to be the beginning. A playoff sighting. Playing in January. The Chicago Bears in the playoffs! Make it happen pace and company…BEAR DOWN!!!
