November 16, 2017: Wading Through It

posted in: Cubs | 1

OK, so we settled it, right?  Jake is not coming back.  Wait, did I say I was OK with that?  Anyways, there is another… his name is Wade Davis.  As we continue wading through it, will he be brought back next year?

I’m going to say NO, and if I had to choose between one or the other, I’m paying Jake.  Yes, I know Wade was lights out… so was Chapman.  So am I saying we’ll be able to find a lights out closer for the 3rd consecutive year?  No, well, that would be nice, but… I didn’t say I didn’t want him back… I just don’t think he will be.

Paying big money for that closer doesn’t seem like something the Cubs want to do.  Again, proof of that is Aroldis; imagine still having him in our pen this past year?  Yeah, along with Dexter, you could say we missed them.  That’s the risk you take not bringing somebody back… letting somebody who did very well for us walk out the door.  I think we’re going to do the same with Wade.  I wish we could have gotten a few more innings out of him then…

Joe ran Chapman into the ground, as evidence in the Game 7 drama.  Would Chapman ever be the same after that postseason?  He sat out for how long this year?  I don’t think his numbers were as good, or maybe that was just a bad run he had???  Either way, I was totally OK with letting Chapman go; maybe I shouldn’t have been.  Maybe we should have pushed to keep him, considering what a disaster our bullpen turned out to be.  The one person who made us feel a little better about it was Wade Davis.

Mr Automatic.  One blown save all year?  Yes, he was excellent.  Not necessarily as physically imposing or dominant as Chapman, but he was razor sharp.  The master locater of his pitches, Wade turned in a year that will get him paid some big bucks.  Somebody will pay him; don’t think it will be us.

Where will he end up?  That’s the other thing about letting our guys go.  Seeing Fowler in St. Louis made my stomach sick; Chapman in the Bronx not so much.  But if Wade were to go to St. Louis too…. if Jake were to go to St. Louis…  I don’t even want to think about it.

Hopefully Wade will get his big pay day by an AL club, and if Jake doesn’t come back, I hope he finds his way back to the AL.  I don’t want to see these guys play us with any regularity.  If Wade leaves, then what is our answer?

I see we’re looking at Britton; I’d be OK with that.  Another guy, like Wade, coming off an injury.  Sign him to a “show me your healthy” one year deal, which best case scenario, turns into a great year for us and a big pay day for Zach.  I wanted Carl to be the closer; I thought he was up next, but it certainly looks like he needs another year… one more year, that’s all he gets.  If he’s not ready after this year, maybe he’ll never be.  I just keep thinking about that 4 pitch walk to Darvish.  I like Carl a lot, but that was painful.  Does he have the closer mentality?

We’re a long way from baseball; wonder how soon the dominoes will fall.  I’ll be watching and waiting.  Considering what we’ve seen from our other teams thus far, I’d be OK with baseball being back already… the question is, who will be back on the roster?  Ready to find out.  Go Cubs!

WD71 was amazing for the Cubs this year. He did better than anyone could have imagined, and like Jake, deserves a big pay day. I agree that I do not think it will be with the Cubs. Going back to the AL would be best, but we have no control over that. I would be happy if the Cubs sign Britton from Baltimore. He was in the conversation mid-year this year, too, but that did not happen. Coming back from injury, he has something to prove and what better place then with the Cubs. We didn’t get to see WD71 enough this postseason, but you usually don’t when not winning. I will of course be fine if WD71 is resigned, but I just don’t think that is going to happen. To me, Jake would be the more important piece of the puzzle. Not sure if Carl will ever pan out as a closer…the control has to be there. Once again, let’s trust in Theo! GO CUBS GO!!!
