November 4, 2017: That Shining Moment

posted in: Bulls | 1

It’s been a rough year for the Timber Pups, my 4-6 year old basketball team.  Saturday was the next chapter in our season to remember; we only had 3 kids show up for the game.  We had to borrow a kid from the other team to setup the 4 on 4 matchup.  He didn’t help much; it was another loss in the books.

It was a 9am start time; I like those the best.  Although many of the other kids/parents did not, I took advantage of the early start time and got to the gym with my son even earlier.  Without practice during the week, this is our only really chance to get in some quality time on the hardwood.  We were the first ones in the gym at about 8:30am.

It’s been a frustrating season for my son as well.  Even though the baskets are lowered down to 8 feet, he still has a hard time making shots.  He has made plenty of shots in practice, but not one in the game.  So what do we do?  Practice some more.  I think the word “practice” is actually sinking in with him.  The other day I was telling him the only way to get better at something… and he filled in the blank… is to practice more.  So that’s what we were here to do.

He spent the first 5-10 minutes missing a ton of shots, getting frustrated, but then… he made one, and another, and another.  He kept wanting to shoot.  I know he probably took over 100 shots in these 30 minutes before the game, but he made 24 of them!  Yes, we were counting.  And number 25 was a dunk he made when I lifted him up.  Not too shabby.  Surely THIS will be the game he makes his first shot.

It was another defensive battle through the first half; we were only down 4-0.  Although my son was doing most of the dribbling & passing like the little point guard he is, he did not shoot.  I kept telling him to shoot; I kept telling this to all the kids.  I understand they get frustrated when they miss, but they need to keep trying.  At halftime, the kids practiced some more.  Our borrowed player made one, and my son made another.  I told them in our team huddle before going back on the court for the 2nd half, that see, we CAN make shots.  All we need is 2 shots to tie the game up; I thought, could we possibly win this game???

The score went up to 6-0, then 8-0 leading into the 4th quarter.  My son had still not taken a shot.  Finally, finally, in the 4th quarter, he caught a pass on the blocks to the right of the basket.  I told him, shoot it!  He turned to the basket, and shot the ball… it went in!!!  You should have saw his face.  I was so happy.  There were people in the gym clapping; it was our first basket in like 3 weeks!  and my son made it!!!!

I went into celebration mode.  I ran up to him and high fived him.  I high fived the other 2 kids on our team.  I even high fived our borrowed player for the day.  I will never forget it.

After that, he ended up taking 2 more shots; it’s amazing once you get one, how your confidence skyrockets.  No, he didn’t make any more shots that game, and yes, we did lose 8-2, but the ice was broken.

He couldn’t wait to tell Mom.  He told her he made 27 shots today… and 1 of them in the game!  I don’t know how the rest of the season will go.  I’m not sure if we will win any games.  I’m not sure if my son will make any more shots.  But, at that moment, at that shining  moment, I didn’t care.  When I saw that shot crawl over the rim, and then looked at his face, everything was right in the world.  I was so proud of him; I am so proud of him.  The best is yet to come…
