I was ready. After unpacking, organizing, and cleaning most of the day, I couldn’t wait to watch Game 5 of the 2017 NLDS. I couldn’t believe we were here; I still had faith. Remember, after Game 7 last year, that faith in this Cubs team is at an all time high. It was almost game time.
As I sat on the floor eating dinner with my family, we flipped on the TV. There was a problem with the cable. We’ve had Directv forever, but decided to go with Xfinity mainly for the internet speed and great intro rate. Uverse was not good and Directv TV wasn’t giving us as many discounts. I was ready for a change. And now, in day 2 of our service, it’s not working? And it’s almost Game time? You’ve got to be kidding me.
It’s 6:30 and we’re calling the cable company. About 30 unsuccessful minutes later, he wants me to go outside to check some stuff. With the phone in one hand, another phone in another hand for the flashlight, pliers and a screwdriver, I’m acting like the cable guy while the game is starting. But hey, we need to try everything we can.
Another frustrating 30 minutes later, nada. It ain’t happening. And as I drop a few F bombs on the call demanding a refund and reminding him that I’m missing the Cubs game, the Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead. It’s time to turn on the radio.
I did, just in time for the Nationals rally. My faith took a hit, but it was still early. I carried the radio upstairs as I gave my son his bath, read him some books, and put him to bed. All the while, keeping one ear on the radio. As my son was falling asleep, the Cubs we’re completing their 5th inning rally…against Scherzer of all people. That was awesome. We are back!

Then it felt like we walked a guy every remaining inning except the 9th. Pat and Ron were exhausted; so was I. The one thing that has absolutely killed us this year have been the walks, especially from the bullpen. Luckily, as the Nationals crept back, we tacked on; we’d need every one of those runs on this night.
Then Joe brought in Wade…in the 7th inning! I think all we had left was Lackey and Wilson, both scary options. I’m guessing if we went extras, Lack would have made it in.
But Wade became the final hero on this night. With the help of a huge pickoff by Willson in the 8th, and two quick outs in the 9th, the only person standing between the Cubs and their third straight NLCS was none other than Bryce Harper. Of course the count went full…of course Wade struck him out. We had it all along.
There have been some drama filled games, none more so than Game 7 last year, but this one…whew. This was one to remember. And I didn’t watch any of it!!! I kept myself busy listening by catching up on this crazy blog; now it’s complete.
And the Cubs head west for an NLCS rematch with the Dodgers. I sure hope the cable is fixed by then, although if this is what it takes for the Cubs to keep winning, I’m in. Go Cubs!

4.5 hours of madness. What a crazy game 5! Thankfully, the Cubs came out on top and have advanced to face the dodgers in an nlcs rematch. This is what most wanted to see, myself included. Maddon and the Cubs used just about everything they had to get it done in game 5. The offense finally scored some runs, but the defense kept give them up, usually compounded by walks. I absolutely hate walking guys. I would rather they hit the ball and see what happens. Yes, the occasional walk is understandable, and in some cases, necessary. But walk after walk after walk is nuts. It drives me insane. Walks kill…period! WD71 was able to settle in after a shaky 7th and 8th to go 123 in the 9th, just like I called. The harper strike out was the icing on the cake as the Cubs advanced to a 3rd straight nlcs. How crazy is that? The Cubs had their backs against the wall again and fought off elimination. Time to head west vs the dodgers. I’m ready. Rest up Cubbies…quick! GO CUBS GO!!!
