I get a feeling that the Cubs have been waiting all year for a game like this. A game that gets that blood pumping. A game that feels like the postseason. A game that feels like last year’s postseason. A game that feels like last year’s World Series. A game that feels like last year’s Game 7. OK, nothing will ever top some of these feelings, but you get what I’m saying?
The World Series hangover as people have called it is partially, in my opinion, due to this 162 game grind coming nowhere close to the feelings experienced in those moments mentioned above. Yes, you need to do well in this 162 game season to get a chance to try to match those feelings again… to get an opportunity to play baseball on the biggest stage. You need to find a way into the postseason to get the glory. And although you’ve felt like it’s been a foregone conclusion at times, there have been other times where we have worried. As the season rolled to game 152 in Milwaukee on Thursday night, you could almost taste it.
Then, as the game went on, and the Brewers came back, took the lead, and had us down to our last strike, that concern creeped back in. Yes, it was only the first in an important four game series, but it may have been the biggest game of the season to this point. To give the Brewers some momentum, to allow them to get that first game, to give them confidence to sweep us again, to allow those thoughts to creep in the back of our heads, that would have been playing a dangerous game. What if the Cubs actually miss the playoffs?
And as Baez settled in for that at bat, I asked for it. I asked for us to see NLCS MVP Javier Baez. In the game’s biggest moment, and as he got down to his last strike, he needed that type of clutch performance… that clutch moment that would wipe away our worries. That clutch moment that would bring all those feelings rushing back. As soon as he hit it, I knew. I knew it was getting through there. He did it! The Cubs tied the game in the bottom of the 9th on their last strike. Wow!!!
Of course Wrigley Field North went crazy, but I’m sure the Brewers and their fans were devastated. Didn’t we just see this happen the night before? To complete this huge win, the Cubs would have to hold them down, and get those bats to produce another run. The bottom of the 9th was started by an unsung hero of the night Justin Grimm. He bailed Wilson’s ass out. He kept it a 1 run game. He was big… like that double play he induced in that same NLCS last year. Then Joe went to Mr. Perfect. Wade Davis, who we received for Jorge Soler if you don’t remember, kept the Brewers down, and sent the game to extras.

Then another familiar hero made an appearance. Another guy who had plenty of moments in last year’s postseason stepped to the plate with a runner on. At 3-1, the Brewers pitcher, the one with the weird delivery, painted the outside corner with a fastball for a strike. Kris got a good look at it. I said, throw that one again. He did. Bryant fouled it off. I didn’t know he’d try to throw that same exact pitch a 3rd straight time vs the reigning NL MVP. KBoom lowered the boom. Big time players, make big time plays.
Then of course Wade came out to close the door, which should have earned him both the win and the save… haha. What, a, F-ing, game!
Are you ready? Are you ready to buckle up again? The Cubs have been waiting for this game all year; we have been waiting for this game all year. For all the ups and downs, all the frustrating moments this season has produced… a lot of the same feelings that were felt during this game vs the Brewers… those feelings were replaced with another feeling; the one that was felt as the W was recorded… man, I remember that feeling. I’m sure the Cubs do too.
And yes, it took until Game 152 to get there, but the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Winners of 8 of their last 9; 10 games to go. The postseason on the horizon. The division only a magic number of 6 away. Are you ready? Game on baby! Let’s Go Cubs!!!

What a damn good game! Playoff type atmosphere, 40 position players used, countless pitchers, and 10 inning masterpiece reminiscent of game 7. Jake pitched well in his return but did not last long. The brewcrew took the lead in the 8th, but with 2 outs and 2 strikes, Baez would come through with a game tying base hit for the Cubs and the entire PR nation recovering from Maria. The brew loaded the bags in the 9th, but WD71 would slam that door with a strikeout and grounder back to himself. He is rock solid and the guys love him. You just had that feeling that the Cubs would come through in the 10, and who better than the reigning nl mvp. KB went KBOOM with a 2run shot to center, and juts like that, it was game over. The Cubs took a crucial first game W amd lowered their magic number to 6. 3 games left vs the brew, 4 in stl, and 2 vs cincy. That is all that is left. The Cubs won a thriller. What would game 2 and the rest of the series have in store? Stay tunes, I got a feeling extra baseball will be getting played!
GO CUBS GO!!!
