September 21, 2017: Only One Way Up

posted in: Bulls | 1

I know it’s the Blackhawks, not the Bulls, that just played their first preseason game.  I’m just not ready to talk hockey yet.  Frankly, I’m not ready to talk basketball yet either… especially about this year’s Bulls, but… yes, we’ll give it a quick go.

Couple newsworthy things happening around the Bulls.  The first is their hiring of Doug Collins as a senior advisor to the crack team of GarPax.  Hmmm… how do I really feel about this?  I like Doug Collins; I really do.  I see it now… the highlight of The Shot, and Collins is running on the court to embrace Jordan.  He has history here.  Yes, he was canned, which lead to Phil taking over, and the whole, you know, dynasty thing.  Since then, he’s been around… we’ve seen him on TV also.  We’ve seen him on ESPN.  We’ve seen him at his son’s games, the historic Northwestern 1st ever tourney appearance.  And now, we’ll be seeing & hearing a lot more from him.  Is this a good thing?

My first instinct is, well, it can’t be a bad thing, can it?  Anything is better than what we have.  Why didn’t he REPLACE one of those buffoons?  We obviously don’t trust GarPax with anything, let alone rebuilding the Bulls from the ground up… because that’s where we’re at… the ground level to put it nicely, the basement to be more blunt, and basketball hell to cut through the BS.  The preseason rankings came out, and there we were… dead last.  30th out of 30 NBA teams; that does feel about right though.

But there I was the other day… looking at the Bulls schedule… trying to figure out what games we’ll attend this year.  This is a big part of the problem as you know.  Although we are dead last in the team rankings, we’ll be right at the top of the league’s attendance numbers.  I was disappointed to hear my brother in law drop his season tickets; I was looking forward to those early evening calls saying the tickets didn’t sell, did you want to go to the game?  Because there would be plenty of those this year.  There have already been plenty of those.  Smart move by him… I’m very thankful for all the games we DID get to go to because of him.

But now, I’ll actually have to pay for tickets.  They shouldn’t be much.  They should be giving them away.  But just the fact that I hate what’s going on with the Bulls right now, and I’m STILL trying to figure out what games I’ll be attending, is the die hard quality of us Bulls fans that the Reinsdorf’s count on.  I mean, this guy comes out with a whole thing in USA Today about the White Sox… yada yada yada… how he WILL win another World Series… how the rebuild WILL work… and not once… not one time does he mention the Bulls.  The Bulls are officially the step child.

And we suffer… we continue to suffer.  Will Doug Collins change that?  He can’t make it any worse, because there’s only one way up from here.  When will we break out of basketball hell?  Doug, do you have that answer?  Now back to Milwaukee for the start of the Cubs series.  I have to cheer myself up you know???  Go Bulls!

The Bulls are the cellar dwellers of the nba. Hiring Doug Collins should be interesting. What exactly is he going to do? Is he going to be the fall guy for garpax in a year or two? Will he bring free agents to Chicago when the time is right? The move can’t hurt but how exactly will it help? With the Bulls being ranked dead last to begin the year, we know what is in store. A less than 30 win season sounds about right. It really does suck. The Bulls were in this same place about 20 years ago. In between these basement dwellings, the Bulls won absolutely nothing. This is the 20th anniversary of the 97-98 season. My how things have changed but really stayed the same since that last Bulls title. The Bulls are nowhere near contending and could be there for a few years. The next moves that the Bulls make will help shape their future. Hopefully, Collins has the right advice, and if still here, garpax actually listens. GO BULLS!!!
