September 5, 2017: Playoffs!

posted in: Cubs | 2

OK, I’m going to bore you some more with some more fantasy talk; this time, baseball.

I made the playoffs; it wasn’t easy.  Unlike football, I have won the fantasy baseball title 2x, finished 2nd 2x, finished 3rd 2x…  I’m good.  This year was not so good.  I endured a 7 game losing streak in the middle of the season that brought me to the bottom of the standings.  I needed to win 7 out of the last 8 weeks to make the playoffs; yeah, I did it.  Well, my guys did it.

But, I do have to take some credit.  It’s a lot of work managing a fantasy team, especially baseball; just ask Dale from Step Brothers.  It’s an everyday thing; not like this football once a week crap.  There are starting pitching rotations that must be closely watched, constant rookies making their debuts, and with the new 10 day DL, a ton of roster shuffling.  To do what I did to just get to the playoffs, was pretty impressive; yeah, that’s me patting myself on the back.

But it don’t mean a thing without the ring, right?  So week 1 of the fantasy playoffs started Monday.  I already had bad news leading up to the start of the playoffs.  Corey Seager has been out, and will be out until this weekend, and may be playing sparingly from here to October; I had to cut him loose.  Have to make the tough decisions, because I can’t worry about this weekend, I need to win THIS week, and it’s going to be a dogfight.  Picked up Delino Deshields Jr… he’s been red hot.  Remember his dad?  from the Expos?  Yeah, he was pretty good for a while too.

Then the ace of my staff gets taken out in the 1st inning after giving up 2 HRs this past weekend.  Yes, that would be Chris Archer, and although there appears to be no serious damage, when is his next start?  He may be the next guy to get cut.  And then there’s my #2 starter, Jake Arrieta.  It’s bad enough to hurt the Cubbies, but now my fantasy team; that’s the risk we take having our hometown guys on the team.  But it makes it that much more fun in my opinion.  Yes, he will be pushed, which does hurt me, but… pushes my other Cub pitcher Hendricks to Sunday for the key double start.  Holding off on cutting Jake too at this point.

My slick pick up, or so I thought, last week was Danny Salazar.  He would be coming off the DL Tuesday against the pathetic White Sox.  Yeah, how’d that work out?  Not so good.  Between him, Jake, and my surprise stud Dylan Bundy, we’re talking minus points; like I said, this wasn’t going to be easy.

Anyways, it’s a tight matchup right now, and with all 3 moves left to make this week, you better believe I’m not leaving any bullets in the chamber.  My watch list is really big right now, as I try to “strike while the iron is hot” with a batter here, or a pitcher there.  If I’m fortunate enough to get past this week, I’ll have to win 2 more weeks to win it all.  So, yes, 10 out of 11 weeks to win the title.  That would be something.

Until then, hoping for no more injuries, and a complete game, shutout, or heck, even no hitter from one (or more) of my pitchers.  Go Curse Busters!

Congrats on the great run to make the playoffs! You needed it and got it. I, on the other hand, folded like a lawn chair the last few weeks to miss the playoffs once again. Oh well, onto fantasy football.

Good luck winning 10 out of 11…anything is possible!
