August 30, 2017: Slaughter Rule

posted in: Cubs | 1

The Cubs put a beatdown on the Pirates Wednesday night to complete the sweep.  It was time for the slaughter rule to be put in effect.  It was time to call off the dogs.  Save some of those runs boys.

There have been games this year, that have followed a big offensive output by the Cubs, that have been duds.  This is the 13th time the Cubs have scored double digits in a victory.  Their record in the game following the previous twelve is 4-8.  Anybody want to bet against the Cubs tomorrow night against the Braves?

I don’t.  They continue to play good baseball.  Again, they have the second best record in baseball since the break.  There was some historic significance in this victory too.  With his 20th HR of the season, Happ became the fastest Cub to reach that plateau, needing only 89 games to get there.  He also joined Baez, Bryant, Contreras, and Schwarber to make the Cubs the first team in MLB history with 5 players 25 or younger to hit 20 HRs in a season.  Thank you @theaceofspaeder and @ckamka for always bringing the good stats.  And thank you Theo Epstein for creating a monster.

This Cubs team be good…they be real good.  Other major league teams can only hope that their rebuild goes as well as the Cubs.  With a World Series title in the bank already, and the window wide open, the sky is the limit for this team.  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  We are living in the golden era of Cubs baseball.

There are no guarantees.  There are no slam dunks.  The goal was to build a team that would make the postseason year after year; a team that by doing so would give themselves a chance at glory every single year.  Through all the struggles this year, all the comparisons that pale to last year, the Cubs maintain their biggest division lead at 3.5 games.  They are also a season high 12 games above 500.  I just got done in my last post saying I’m not going to look ahead to the playoffs…it’s hard not to.

With one day left in August, there are not many teams you want to avoid more than the Cubs right now.  The Dodgers?  The Indians?  I’ll give you that, and I’ll still take the Cubs over anybody when it comes down to it.  Because they are the defending champs; they have climbed that mountain.  They know what it takes, arguably more than any team, breaking the longest drought in professional sports.  We’re not there yet…not yet.

And just like my family settling into the back to school routine, the Cubs seem to be settling in for another nice long run that starts now.  I can feel it.  My 5 year old seemingly feels it too.  After asking to watch the Cubs the other night, and making this dad’s day, he’s been asking to watch them every night.  The time that is usually reserved to read books, has been temporarily replaced with us laying down together watching the middle innings before he passes out; we read books during breakfast now.

The feeling is coming back.  With tickets to Saturday’s game and next Sunday’s game, I’ll be back in the house at Wrigley; I’m sure I’ll feel it even more then.  It’s go time baby.  Let’s keep that lead.  Let’s check that first box and get back to the second season for the third straight year.  Go Cubs!

The Cubs made quick work of the bucs to finish off the sWeep. This Cubs offense comes in waves, and when it does, it is hurtful to opposing pitchers. Happer hit his 20th to set a new record with 5 players 25 or under all with 20 or more home runs…pretty damn impressive. Young talent that should keep getting better is a damn good thing. 12 games over with a 3.5 game lead. Keep opening up a little more distance. Still 7 left with the brewcrew. Maybe the Cubs will put them out of their misery then. As for now, welcome the braves to town for a 4 game set. Anybody thinking sWeep there? 7 in a row and a perfect homestand? That would be nice, but taking 3 of 4 and winning the series is all that matters. That and the team’s health. GO CUBS GO!!!
