At this time last year, it was already a given that the Cubs were going to the playoffs. By the way, just thinking about last year, still gets me happy; FYI, it always will. This year is a bit different, yet lately, there have been those discussions about the starting rotation for the first round of the playoffs. I love looking ahead to that, but there is still some business to attend to…
Like for starters, there are still 14 games to go against the 2nd and 3rd place teams in our division. After the victory against the Pirates on Tuesday night, the Cubs got back to their biggest lead of the year at 3.5 games over the Brewers; it’s 5 games over the Cardinals. Oh yeah, and they’re playing each other, so that’s good too. The Cubs need to keep doing what they’re doing, besides losing a series to a last place team.
Since the break, they have the 2nd best record in baseball, behind of course, the Dodgers. I like the attitude of “bring it on” when it comes to LA, but there are so many more boxes to check before we will see them. Let’s start by getting healthy.
To win it all, you need a lot of things to go your way, like a 17 minute rain delay for example. One of the biggest things over the last 2 years for the Cubs has been their health. This year, not so much. Currently, Addison, Willson, and Jon Lester are out; regardless of how well Baez has been playing at SS, regardless of what a great acquisition Alex Avila was, and regardless of how well Montgomery has pitched, we will need all of our horses come playoff time, especially our big horses, like the 3 guys I mentioned. Getting them back will be key, not only long term, but in helping check off that first box… NL Central Division Champs.

That is the closest race in baseball. The AL East is getting a bit heated. Not only do 4 games separate the first place Red Sox from the 2nd place Yankees, but the Orioles are creeping at 8 games back now. The Twins have surprisingly stood close to the Indians, only 6.5 games back, while KC is hanging on by a string at 9.5 games back. And in the AL west… at least they have a chance at the wild card after Houston. Speaking of the wild card, have you seen how many teams have a shot in the AL? Wow!!! And no, one of them is not the Sox… but they are still chasing that worst record in the league, currently 3 games behind the Phillies. Hey, we tried to help out by losing to them…
In the NL, it’s a different story. Dodgers, IN. Nationals, IN. Wild card will be Arizona and Colorado, followed by the late surging Marlins, and the runners up in the NL Central. There are already 7 teams out of it, although I guess the Pirates could make a run. The Cubs need to keep increasing their lead, so we can get back to talking about the playoff rotation.
For now, that will have to wait; no, I’m not going there yet. Much more baseball to be played. If the Cubs continue to play like they have been, like Jake being Jake, and Wade being perfect, the two latest examples, we’ll be good. We are good… shout out to Miggy, now let’s keep showing everybody. I’m loving it. Go Cubs!!!

Nothing to look ahead to right now. Just enjoying the 3.5 game lead in the nl central. The Cubs still have plenty of work to do, but they have been playing great baseball. Keep doing that while getting guys healthy at the same time, and hope it all adds up to making a 3rd straight postseason appearance. The Cubs have their fate in their hands…not much more to ask for. Win series, avoid a losing streak, and hope the brew or red turds don’t reel off 10 in a row. Definitely, no getting swept by either of those teams. The pitching has been a lot better. Jake looks more like his old self. Kyle is getting his stuff back. Lester should be rested and ready to go…stay healthy. Lackey is performing well in his last season with the Cubs, and Q will be fine. So finish the 30 or so games left strong. Get healthy and get ready to go back to back! Just do it…again! GO CUBS GO!!!
