July 23, 2017: Match Play

posted in: Cubs | 1

Sunday night baseball brought us a little match play between the Cubs and Cards.  Cards went up 2-0; Cubs tied it.  Cards hit a HR to go up 3-2; Cubs hit a HR to tie it 3-3.  Every time the Cardinals got a lead, the Cubs answered.  They also had the final response, a 2 run HR to give the Cubs the game and the series.  It is always sweeter beating these birds.

8-1 after the All Star break is where we sit; that’s good for best in the majors.  Meanwhile, Milwaukee has been falling on their face, going 3-7 in their first 10 games post break.  The Cubs have made up the entire 5.5 games, and now sit percentage points in 1st place in the NL Central.  We’re back where we belong.

Of course, we can’t stop now.  Still tied with the Brewers, the Pirates within 3 games, and these birds within 4.5, this division is not over by a long shot.  But, it certainly feels good to watch the Cubs play like we know they can.  THIS is what we were expecting as the encore performance of their World Series championship.

Schwarber hit another moon shot.  He still hasn’t hit his stride, but he’s good for a monster dinger every so often.  And then what else can you say about Contreras?  This guy has been unbelievable.  Do we really need a veteran backup catcher?  I guess to cover off on injuries, or hopefully to start some meaningless games down the stretch as the Cubs build a nice lead, but how can you take Willson out of the lineup?  Between his bat and his arm, the guy is a difference maker.  Now batting cleanup, he has been the most valuable Cub on a team of potential MVPs.  His enthusiasm is contagious, as he screams after throwing a runner out, or celebrates during his home run trot.  We saw both of those in this game.  We also saw him tag Carpenter in a play at the plate in the first.  It was a good, nice, hard, push his ass to the ground tag.  It was perfect for the big stage; it was perfect for this rivalry.  That is Willson Contreras.  Move over Molina… who by the way, has had a nice career, but HOF?  Pump those brakes Cardinal faithful.

Quintana gave us a quality start in his home debut, but that’s what he does.  It’s no surprise.  He’ll keep churning out quality start after quality start; we just need to score some runs.  This could be a match made in baseball heaven.  The only bad thing, is that he won’t be able to face the White Sox this week, since he just threw Sunday night.

Yes, the Crosstown Classic begins.  Cubs winning 8 of their last 9, vs the Sox losers of 9 straight.  But as we all know, we can throw the records out the window for the next 4 days.  It’s civil war time.  It’s the one time of year, where I can release my ill feelings towards the White Sox.  I always support Chicago, so I won’t cheer against them; this is the one case where I can…emphatically.

Let the good times roll.  Let’s keep that pedal to the floor, and build the type of lead we should have.  I don’t ever want to look up in the standings again…. ever.  Haha…  Go Cubs!

The Cubs capped the red turds series with a W on Sunday night baseball to take 2 of 3 from them. 8-1 to open the 2nd half. Willson has been leading the charge. He has been great defensively as well as handling the staff, plus he continues to get better with the bat. He is hitting in the 4 hole giving Rizzo some protection. It is an important spot in the lineup. Hopefully, he can keep his great play going, but his enthusiasm and passion are definitely contagious, and it showed on the play at the plate in the first. Ross helped Willson last year and may still be in some capacity this year, but he has taken the catching job and run with it.
Now the sox come to Wrigley on a 9 game slide. Records be damned, this is the Crosstown Classic. What used to be a 6 game series, 3 in each ballpark, is now down to a 4 game series, 2 in each ballpark. The first 2 at Wrigley followed up with the last 2 in Guaranteed Rate (what a horrible name!). Keep rolling Cubbie blue train!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
