It was only one game, but damn. 7 innings of shut out ball with 12 Ks; I will remember Jose Quintana’s first impression as a Cub. Immediate dividends.
It topped off a beautiful 3 game sweep to start 2017 post all star break. The blown comeback win, followed by a vintage good Jake performance, topped by the debut of Q. Oh yeah, the bats were alive too; that always helps.
I’ll always remember that running Twiiter thread of Jose Quintana’s run support over so many games with the Sox. It went something like this: 0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 0, 1, 1…you get the picture. As a matter of fact, I saw another beautiful stat the other day. When Jose gets 3 or more runs of support, his record is 49-14. Not too shabby, eh?
He was, and still is, one of the most under appreciated starters in the league. Playing for the Sox didn’t help that. Playing for the Cubs will. Playing for the Cubs and pitching like THAT will. He was that hard luck guy. The guy that never got proper run support. He was the guy that kept marching out there giving you quality starts, and having nothing to show for it. Well, let’s hope that’s all about to change. One for one as a starter for the Cubs.
But, I guess we could worry about that run support with the Cubs too; well, at least the 2017 first half Cubs. This weekend was different…a throwback to last year’s title run. Can we expect more of the same? It’s not like we haven’t been getting on base. It’s that elusive hitting with RISP that sucked. How does that get fixed? Well, whatever it is, I think it’s contagious.

Hit here, hit there. Home run here, home run there. This guy gets hot, that guy gets hot. When this thing gets rolling, watch out. We never doubted that it would eventually start to roll right? Not saying we’re there yet, but we’ve been waiting.
The addition of a top notch starter will help. Not only in the obvious way, but helping motivate the other starters who hadn’t really been themselves this year. Jake will want to match it, so will Lester. Kyle will be back soon. Heck, maybe it will even help Lackey get his shit together. If the starters started pitching like the last 2 years, and we started hitting with RISP… The sky is the limit…again.
I had thought about heading out to Camden Yards; we looked at the next stop too, in Atlanta, with their new stadium. Baltimore would have been fun. Man were they smacking the ball around; man were they throwing the ball around. Man were they catching that ball. It’s a simple game right? Hit it, throw it, catch it well, and you’ll be ok. Sounds like a t-shirt idea for Joe…
It was fun to see. It felt good. Winning always does. Next stop, Atlanta, where the Braves have surprisingly not been that terrible. I’m sure there will be plenty of fans there as usual, cheering on our boys. It kind of feels like the season has just started. Go Cubs!

sWeep you very much Os! Cannot open the 2nd half much better than the Cubs did. Bats came out hot with long balls flying. Jake looked great. Q looked even better. The midseason pickup went 7 strong with 12 Ks and no runs. Oh thank you! Pretty impressive stat you mention of 49-14 with 3 or more runs…wow! I remember seeing those run support numbers with the sox, too. Hopefully, the Cubs can keep sWinging hot bats and giving all of their pitchers some wiggle room. So the Cubs sWeep the Os on the road and head to Wrigley south to chop the braves! Lester will be on the mound, and after watching what Jake and Q did, should be ready to match them. If he does, the Cubs will be 4-0 to start the 2nd half…that would be pretty sWeet. Are they back? Tap those brakes, but they do look similar to a certain championship team from last year…yeah baby, you know who!
GO CUBS GO!!!
