Friday rolled around, and baseball was back. I couldn’t wait for the second half debut. Wanting to get that first half dud in the rear view as quick as possible, I was really hoping the Cubs would come strong out of the gates. I wasn’t disappointed.
8-0? We had our game on Friday night. By the time I got in the car to drive home, the score was already 8-0. The only bad thing was that the Orioles starting pitcher was on my fantasy baseball team. It was so good to see the bats came out blazing, and we started off the second half with a blowout win. But hold on…
The Orioles starting fighting back… a deuce at a time. I actually turned it off when the Cubs were up 8-6 to watch a show with my wife. When it was over, I flipped back, and saw the ugly development; Baltimore had just tied the game off Koji with a Trumbo 2 run bomb. Suddenly, this great start to the first half was turning into a nightmare. To start off the second half by losing a game like this… after the first half that we had… maybe this really isn’t our year. Then the top of the 9th happened.
I surely thought Baez was getting on base. He had a great at bat, that ended with him just missing a fastball. He slammed the bat down in disgust. Next up was Addison Russell. One of the many young Cub studs that has been struggling, he didn’t wait. He saw that first pitch fastball and he hit that first pitch fastball. I knew that quick little bat flip meant something good; I hope it meant that ball was going out of the yard… and it did. Russell was pumped running around the bases; the entire dugout celebrated with a bit of relief I’m sure. Of course, there were still 3 more outs to get.

But we have Mr. Perfect closing games for us this year. Yes, perfect in his save opportunities, I don’t hesitate saying that every single time he takes the mound with the lead. No jinxes here… not any more. The World Series title helped with some of those superstitions. By me saying he’s been perfect, does not mean he will blow it. I’m sure he will eventually blow a save, but I’ve been saying it about the last dozen times; the odds are definitely with me.. and with Wade.
He shut the door, and the Cubs started off the second half with a big time W. Yes! Undefeated post All Star break! The Cubs are back! OK.. it was only one game. Still have the rest of the series to take care of business… and the rest of the season for that matter. We’re in full chase mode at this point for both the division and the wild card; I am staying positive. With Jake back in Baltimore on Saturday, and Q with his debut on Sunday, what would the rest of the weekend look like? Much like the first game… Go Cubs!

The Cubs jumped out of the gate and rolled the Os for 8 runs. The Cubs played long ball with 5 home runs. Yes, an 8-0 lead surely looked like the game was in hand. Like the first half of the season, pump those brakes. The Os responded by inching their way back into the game and tying it in the 8th. Ouch…kick to the stomach and gut check time for the Cubs. How do they respond? ARuss hits a first pitch fastball out to left like a laser! Exactly the answer the Cubs needed. WD71 slammed the door to stay perfect in the 9th, and the Cubs started the 2nd half with a much needed W. 45 or 50 more of those in the 2nd half should do the trick. Get on a roll Cubbies. The blue train is on the tracks! GO CUBS GO!!!
