July 9, 2017: First Half Mulligan

posted in: Cubs | 1

43-45.  Who would have thunk it?  The White Sox really played above their heads in the first half of the 2017 season.  Just kidding.  Nobody is interested in their record…yet.

No, unfortunately that was the 2017 Cubs record heading into the break.  Man that was an ugly game on Sunday.

We’ve been trying to use the gift cards that we have. So on this Sunday afternoon, we headed to Chili’s.  We had been once or twice before. Nothing special, but the $50 gift card we had made our decision easy.  I hope we never get another Chili’s gift card.  Don’t get me wrong; I finished my burger.  It just wasn’t anything special. Neither were my wife’s fajitas and my son’s kids meal.  This will be our last visit to Chili’s.

This isn’t about Chili’s though.  But as we sat there and watched the scores scroll across the bottom of the screen, we saw Pirates 10 Cubs 0 bottom of the 1st inning.  I don’t recall seeing many errors in that running list of scores, but thought maybe it was. Somebody could have made a mistake. It’s possible.  There’s no way they’re losing 10-0…in the first inning!!!

It was true. The Cubs iced the title of most runs given up in the first inning thus far.  Usually it’s 1-3 runs, but 10?!?  I then thought who was pitching.  As the texts came in, I found out it was Lester, our most solid first half starter.  Ouch.  My wife then asked the waiter to change the channel to the Cubs game, as if I was looking to be tortured.

Truth is, just chalk it up. Games like that will happen. There have been too many like this so far this year, especially lately.  Actually, can we just have a first half mulligan?

Workd series hangover?  Even I can’t remember being hungover that long.  Although, I do remember a time where it took me a long time to get over something. That was in 2003. It was months before I recovered from that NLCS choke. Honestly, it wasn’t until last November that I was fully recovered…14 years later!

Yes, the Cubs washed away many past pains with that championship…THE championship.  Does that work going forward too?  Does this give the Cubs a mulligan for a while…at least this year?

I’m not ready to claim that yet; still lots of baseball to be played. But, I am willing to chalk the first half up. Screw it. We sucked. It’s ok. If it took me 14 years to recover from that loss, how long will it take me to come down off the high of that win?  The answer is never.  Even if there was an answer, I know it wouldn’t have been reached yet.

How will the rest of the year turn out?  We’ll talk about that for both sides of town soon. We’ll take our ganders on how this season will end. For now, let’s forget about this first half.  Let’s move on starting Friday vs Baltimore. Still plenty of time to make some noise.  Of course there are no mulligans in baseball, so that record will stand; we still have time to turn it around.  Speaking of mulligans, it was time for my annual golf trip.  That’s next.

43-45…no way to predict that for the 2017 Cubs. The World Series hangover has now lasted 88 games. Only Jon Jay is batting .300…exactly. Everybody else on the roster is below that. The offense continues to struggle, especially when it comes time to get a big hit with runners on. Too much talent to not get it turned around in the 2nd half…seems like I have been saying that for a while now. The pitching is not much better. Lester at 5-6, lackey at 5-9. Jake, Kyle, and Eddie Butler of all people 1 game over .500. A team ERA of 4.10…not so good. When will the Cubs turn it all around and play some complete baseball? It better start soon in the 2nd half as the brewcrew now hold a 5.5 game lead with 2 teams in the nl west holding down both wild card spots. I believe in the Cubbies. I trust in Theo. Will he bring some help this 2nd half. Stay tuned for more Cubs baseball as well as the help! GO CUBS GO!!!
