People are starting to take notice of another Chicago team. The Chicago Fire professional soccer team has been playing really well from what I hear. I’m not interested.
Sorry, I don’t want to knock the sport of futbol…it’s called soccer here by the way, but I can’t get into it. I remember having a conversation with one of my neighbors, who was originally from England. She loved soccer, and thought baseball was boring. I told her that I felt the exact opposite. I guess it’s what you grew up with. We’ve been down this path before.
I’ve watched the World Cup, the one time I get into soccer. Other than that…these European leagues they’re showing on TV, the ones whose scores are plastered over ESPN, not interested. Now, a Chicago team is doing well in that sport. Bravo. I’m happy for them, but I would watch any baseball game over one of their games. Actually, I’d watch almost anything else than soccer.
Maybe we’ll go to a game. I did attend one soccer game out in LA. My wife wanted to see Beckham play. We got seats right off the field, and when Beckham took one of those side outs (I think), he was right in front of us. It was worth every penny. I’d go to a Fire game for a similar reason. I’d go for somebody else’s viewing pleasure. I’d take my son to his first soccer game. Heck, I’d even buy him a tshirt. They are a Chicago team after all.

So that’s why I should be supporting them, right? I guess I’m talking myself into that. Even though I dislike the sport, I shouldn’t be hating. I do remember the Sting back in the day. I think they actually won it all, before any of my other teams did. My nephew plays soccer. I haven’t been to a game, but have seen some nice footage. Maybe he’ll be a star in the MLS one day. Heck, maybe my son will want to play soccer. Maybe I need to get onboard with the world’s most popular sport.
Maybe. Not now though. When the sportswriters and radio guys want to talk about the Fire, I scoff. Again, I shouldn’t be hating, but please don’t put them in the same category as the other teams. I know they may outdraw the Sox, but still… Who really cares? Ok, I’m going to stop.
Go Fire is what I should be saying. I should be looking to take my family to a game. I should be supporting this Chicago team and this great sport. I should exercise more too.
I know they signed this popular player from Germany I believe. That would be the only player I know. I’m not about to invest time into another team, sorry. I hope they do well, but I will not care either way. We may go see a game, but this old dog ain’t getting taught any new tricks. I love my Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Hawks; no more room on this plate. Unless I’m kicking the Bulls out…now that’s a thought…

Have to disagree with you on this one. It was called “futbol,” before “football” was created. I also love my Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Hawks, but I also do love my soccer. “Sports” are a big plate, so I’m sure there is room for the Chicago Fire, but its not covered enough to make it news worthy, much like the Chicago Wolves, who get no love in the Chicago sports scene. But going to a Wolves or Fire game is really fun. Its great time for the family and it wont “break the bank.” Much like a CUBS game we went to in June. Parking was a dream and the stadium was nice, especially being 10mins away from my house!
I realize that soccer may never catch on and the Chicago Fire will never be the top story, but give them a chance, you might be surprised!

I really dont pay attention or watch much soccer. Not that I dont like it, but it is farther down my list than other things. My son plays and I coach so that has to count for something. I am no expert, but I enjoy showing the young kids some things. My son loves soccer and plays really well. That would be cool if he went on to the mls or one of those other leagues. I dont follow the fire much but have been to a game. It is a good time and a whole lot cheaper than any of the major sports, especially for the whole family. Futbol or soccer, whatever you want to call it, is alright with me.
