As we continue our look at championship month here in Chicago, we look to the latest 2 championships won in the month of June. I’m surprised the NBA and NHL playoff seasons haven’t pushed to July yet.
Remember when the entire MLB postseason concluded in October, or when the Super Bowl would always be held in January? These things keep getting pushed out; the NBA and NHL seasons will be in July before you know it, especially considering how they spread out the Finals. Drag it out further. Stretch that dollar. Make the season an entire 12 months! OK, a bit overboard, but you get the drift. No July Championships yet, but there may be one day.
For now, the NBA and NHL champs are determined in the month of June. We’ve already reviewed 7 of the 9 titles won in that month in my lifetime; that would be the 6 Bulls titles and 3 Hawks cups in case you didn’t know how old I was. June 20th and 24th were the longest we had to wait to celebrate; let’s just say it’s always worth the wait.

Yes, it was the one moment that was carrying John Paxson’s ass up to this point. I’ll always love him for that shot, and of course, for the 1st two titles too. But as a GM… man, does he have to go. That final 4th quarter in Phoenix was awesome. MJ scored every point in that quarter except for the final shot. Every Bull touched the ball on that final possession before the ball swung to a wide open Paxson; he didn’t miss. I jumped up, and started banging on my parents’ living room door. The game wasn’t over yet; it was not a buzzer beater. Phoenix had the ball, and Kevin Johnson had the last shot; Horace Grant played hero, and swatted it away before he threw his goggles in the air in celebration. And Mike held up those 3 fingers… I could go on…
The latest in the month we had to wait was in 2013. On June 24th that year, the Blackhawks made “17 seconds” famous. It certainly looked like we would have a Game 7 that year. First Bickell… we weren’t even done celebrating the goal that tied it up, when Bolland scored the go ahead goal. It was something else. And as Horace threw his goggles, Bolland threw his gloves… and the celebration began.
It seems like forever since the Blackhawks won… that’s crazy. It seems like another lifetime when the Bulls last won….that is oh so true. 9 titles between the two teams in my lifetime… should that be enough? Man, I’d hate to think I won’t see another Bulls title in my lifetime… same with the Blackhawks, but this is coming from a guy who finally saw his last team win a title with the Cubs in November. I’ve mentioned this before, but the team that is due up next to win a title, is the Bears. I don’t think they are the furthest away; that title is reserved for the Bulls. Yet, I still think we have a couple years minimum to wait there. When that day comes, it would be the first February title in my lifetime… or maybe it will be March by then… Let’s get another title Chi Town!!!!

The 3rd title capping off the 3peat was great! MJ did everything in that 4th quarter vs the suns. Were the Bulls really going to be forced to a game 7? Hell no! Paxson for 3? YES! He buried that jumper like he did so many during the 3peat years. His game 5 vs la in 91 and his game winning 3 vs the suns in 93 will never be forgotten, no matter how bad he screws the Bulls as gm now.
The middle title for the Hawks was damn crazy. Extra attacker trying to tie the game…sure, why not. Toews to Bickell to the back of the net…game tied. As the celebration continued, Bolland stuffs a rebound home for the game winner and the Hawks 2nd title in 4 years. What a great 17 seconds!
Which Chicago team will win the next title? I would love to have 2 or 3 teams win in the same year…how cool would that be? Well, the Cubs can go back to back this year before anybody else has the chance. The Hawks always seem close. The Bears are getting closer but still a few away. The Bulls seem to have moved light years away now. Who wants it? GO CHICAGO!!!
