With all the craziness that was Chicago sports last week, one thing seemed to be lost in the shuffle: the demotion of Kyle Schwarber to the minor leagues. Any other week, and that would have been THE top story.
You wonder if Theo planned it this way? With the NBA & NHL drafts in the same week…with both Chicago teams talking about change…heck, even with the White Sox hitting the radar this week with all the Mark Buerhle stuff going on, it couldn’t have been a better week to make this move, deflecting a lot of the attention it normally would have received.
Some would argue this move should have been made a while ago. Many argued against the whole Kyle lead off experiment since its inception. Some blame Joe for his struggles…because he left him in that spot on his way to the lowest batting average in the majors. I don’t. There’s only one person to blame, and that’s Schwarby.
He did it to himself. With the postseason performance in 2015, followed by the miraculous comeback from injury coupled with his World Series heroics, he set the bar so damn high. Many of us thought (I said us) that a full year of the Mighty Schwarbino would be amazing. Sky is the limit. This kid can do anything. Batting leadoff? That’s nothing to this kid that’s accomplished so much, on the game’s biggest stage. The funny thing, is that he has barely spent any time on its normal stage.
He hasn’t even played a full season yet. 135 games to be exact. He hasn’t been through the grind; he hasn’t struggled. The kid mashed coming out of college, making his way quickly to the major league roster. He then became legendary with his postseason performances. And now, it’s back to the grind; it’s back to normal. That’s has to be pretty hard, not to mention still adjusting at the plate to all the adjustments pitchers have made to him. That’s really the key to long term success: coming out on top in the adjustment game.

It’s about battling through the the slumps. It’s easy when things are going well, not so much when they’re not. The Cubs rave about this kid’s make up; you can tell..he’s a straight gamer. Now, this mental fortitude will be put to the test again. He had to deal with a season ending injury. Now, he deals with being sent back down to the minors. Anybody doubt this kid?
I don’t. I still think he’s going to be a big part of the Cubs future. I believe he’ll overcome this latest challenge, get his mind right, and get back to Wrigley. What’s the worst that could happen?
Well, what if he never finds it. What if he’s never able to get back. What if we trade him. That all sounds far fetched to me, but anything is possible. And you know what? Even if one of the worst case scenarios plays out, he’ll still be a Cubs legend forever. His place is already etched in stone; he can only add to it, never take away.
So good luck Kyle. Don’t rush it. Don’t press. Relax. Get your head together. Get your hitting eye back. Find that groove again. We’ll be here. We aren’t going anywhere. If you need to take until October, that’s cool too. After all, that’s when your season really begins. Go Cubs!

Schwarby to the minors was news but nothing shocking. The guy isn’t hitting his weight or anywhere near .200. Yes, he can bomb with the best of them, but that is not always what is needed. Schwarby needs to work on getting his eye back. It should not be home run or strikeout only. He seems to be a natural hitter. He needs to focus on the strike zone again and not try to mash every pitch he sees. I am fine with the demotion. He will be back and should be better than he’s been. Schwarby is a big part of the Cubs future. Refocus yourself and get back to hitting, not homering, no matter what spot he is in the lineup. We believe Schwarby…you should too!
GO CUBS GO!!!
