June 24, 2017: Early Game Blues

posted in: Cubs | 1

Is the time a game is played that important?  We hear it in sports all the time.  Back in the day, heck, still pretty recently, all those Cubs home day games, more than any other team, was blamed for performance.  How about the Bears playing back to back road games on a Sunday followed by a Thursday night game?  Or even the Blackhawks with the different start times to accommodate a national TV schedule during the playoffs?  Foley went off on that before.  There may be some truth to all that.

My kids played their second early game of the year this Saturday.  It was kind of like the last early game the week before; listening was not our best quality.  Who does listen nowadays anyways?  Everybody always wanting to say what they have to say, or thinking of things to say to respond to what you’re saying instead of listening to what you’re saying.  Or how about multi tasking, while seemingly being more efficient, is essentially doing things half ass.  Yeah, and I’m going to expect these 5 year old kids to listen?  I really do set my goals high.

The differnce is that we unofficially won this week, to improve to that unofficial 3-1 record.  The reason was because we made some nice plays on defense.  My son was flashing the leather out there, responsible for a couple outs himself.  Between him and another kid, all the ground balls were being gobbled up. The key was to throw it to first base accurately before the other kid tackles you.  It really is a lot of fun.

The kids can hit too.  One almost took my leg out with a shot right back at me during the third inning when I pitch to them.  My son actually hits the pitching better than the tee; I guess that’s a good thing.  Yet, it was all the kids doing their own thing the whole morning that I focused on…trying to get them to pay attention, trying to get them to listen.  Whether it was somebody drawing a house in the sand at third base, trying to bury a ball in the sand by the dugout when they should have been on defense, or walking out towards the outfield when they weren’t able to win the race to the ball, it was chaos.  I just go with the flow; it feels like that’s all I can do at this point.

We’ll keep at it.  We’ll get through these early game blues.  Actually, next week, we’ll have our first night game, starting at 6pm on Friday night.  If they do better at 1130 games than 930 games, how will we fare at the late game?

We huddle up at the end of the game, trying to get everybody to gather around and put their hands in the middle.  I ask them, did we have fun today?  And when I get that answer, I know it was a good week.  Go Cubs!

Time a game gets played has to impact players, right? I mean, we are all creatures of habit to a certain extent. What happens what those habits are forced to adjust? Not making excuses. These guys get paid millions to play games so they should adjust to anything and everything…no excuses! Just saying that I can see the argument.
As for kids, listening is definitely not a priority most of the time. They want to do what they want or say what they want more times than not. Keep getting outs and having fun, the listening wont come until they’re older…maybe!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
