Wow. It’s been that long. As we continue to celebrate the championship month of June, we turn back the clock 21 years to 1996. That’s when the greatest NBA team of all time was putting their finishing touches on another NBA title.
This one was a bit more special. It’s hard for me to rank it ahead of the first in 1991, so let’s just call it even. Of course, this was the title that was the cherry on top of a 72-10 regular season record. This was the first of a second three peat, the first after MJ’s return from his short stint as a minor leaguer. It was the return of those summer parties that we loved so much during the 90s running of the Bulls. 21 years ago today, the Bulls claimed their 4th franchise title.
What would have happened if MJ hadn’t retired? I’ll always stick to my claim of 8 peat. I love when I see people saying the Rockets would have beat us. Hakeem would have joined Ewing, Barkley, Malone, and Stockton in the “no ring because of MJ” club. Can you imagine 8 straight? But would they have won 72?
Jordan came back late the year before, which preceded his/our postseason loss to the Magic. You know what happens when MJ is given extra motivation. Coming back that following season, he was on a mission more than ever. Pippen with a couple years of playing without him. Rodman coming to the Bulls. Things seemed to line up just perfectly for this magical season.
It brought back that can’t miss TV that MJ and the Bulls were for so long. Not to say I wasn’t watching Pete Meyers at the 2, and Scottie turn into more of a beast himself, but there was something missing. With the band back together and as hungry as 1990-1991, it was fun.

It wasn’t so much of MJ dunking on everybody, although there was that. It was the older and wiser Jordan, but it was still Jordan. Thinking we had seen the last of him…then to have him back…we knew what we were seeing…we knew to savor each of these moments. And that’s how the Bulls felt about every game that season.
I remember the 70th win against the Bucks, and the playoff series win against the Knicks. But the Magic sweep was very sweet; a little payback and they couldn’t even finish the job that year. And then of course the win over the Sonics on Father’s Day after NBC prolonged the series. The Bulls were officially back on top of the world, and so were we.
Now, teams are compared to these Bulls, most recently the Golden State super team. Sorry to break it to you, but nobody was beating this team in a 7 game series. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Two more June championships to remember. I will eventually do a feature about each of them. For now, just a quick peek in the time machine. There are other things going on you know.

72-10 with the title! That equals the best team in nba history! The 96 Bulls were aWesome. MJ came back in shape and more motivated than ever. Pippen was as good as he had been, and Rodman was a defensive and rebounding machine. I agree that if MJ had not retired after 93, the Bulls would have won 8 in a row! MJ and the Bulls never lost a finals series. Never got pushed to a game 7 in the finals. Does anyone really think the rockets would have beat them? Please. I would never bet against an MJ led Bulls team. The ultimate competitor on the best team…hard to beat that. Let the 2nd 3peat begin!
