It has to be tough to call somebody into the office, and let them know they have been cut, or even traded. Unless your Brad Pitt in Moneyball, then it’s pretty straight forward. I imagine some of these conversations are tough: Letting someone know that their dream is over, that they can go home, that their services are no longer needed. It was time for the Bears to cut down their roster this weekend.
Kelvin Hayden was probably the most surprising Bears cut. Yeah, we got Peanut, Jennings, and now Fuller for CBs, but you can never have enough CBs, especially in the pass happy league that the NFL has become. We never really got to see Hayden in action, after he was hurt last year when we acquired him. Now, he’s back healthy, and he gets cut. Not much we can do about it, but trust in the coaching staff that they have made the right decisions. Maybe this is just the motivation someone needs to go ahead and be successful.
The most famous cut of all time was Michael Jordan from his HS basketball team. That tough experience motivated him to eventually get on the team. Eventually, this experience motivated him to become the best ever… it rarely works out that way. What will happen to Hayden and the rest of the Bears’ cuts? Jordan Lynch was another notable cut this weekend. He was a feel good story, but maybe he really did not have a chance to make the team. I’m sure Hayden will catch on somewhere, not so sure about Lynch. I wonder how many other players who have been cut turned out to make it big…
Getting traded is not as bad as getting cut, but it’s still a huge change for a player. Take Samardzija and Hammel. Happy 4th of July, you’ve just been traded to Oakland. In this case, they had to expect it was coming. In this case, to go from a last place team to a first place team could definitely be viewed as a positive. Regardless, it still has to feel bad that your team got rid of you. Although on the flip side, it has to feel good that another team wanted you. There have been many traded players that have turned out to have huge careers. There have been a couple traded Cubs that have turned into HOFers…

The Sox got in the trade business this year… finally. It seemed like the wrong thing to do for the White Sox to stand pat at the trade deadline; they have been making up for it since then. Beckham to the Angels and now D’Aza to the Orioles (and just in, Adam Dunn to the A’s!!!) were good moves to get prospects back. It also allows some of their younger players to play at the Cell. It’s important to see what you got; the Cubs finally got that right too this year.
Professional sports is a business. Cutting players & trading players is a part of it. Seeing a favorite player of ours get cut or traded cannot feel good, but it is inevitable. I didn’t like to see Hester get traded. I didn’t like to see Samardzija get moved. I can name many players who have left my teams that I have been unhappy about.
I hope the Bears have made all the right moves this preseason. I hope they are ready for the regular season. It will start a week from today. Let’s hope that Hayden is not lined up against us this season making big plays. Let’s hope that Peppers does not make us pay this year. It’s always worst when a cut or traded player comes back to haunt us. I don’t want to see Hester return a kick, or Lovie win in Soldier Field again for the opposition. It’s inevitable to cross paths with these individuals. I hope we made the right choices. I hope we prove that we did by winning in each of these cases this year. Let the W be the ultimate judge of our decisions.
