June 11, 2017: The Sixty Percenters

posted in: Cubs | 1

After winning the first 5 games of this latest 10 game home stand, I certainly thought that the Cubs would have done better than 6-4.  Nope.  The Cubs were the sixty percenters on this Wrigley 10.  That’s still good, right?

Well, let’s just assume the Cubs will win 60% of their remaining games.  Let’s just HOPE that the Cubs win 60% of their remaining games.  It’s really easy to calculate considering their current record of 31-31.  That leaves 100 games remaining.  That means they have to go 60-40 to hit that 60% mark.  With one more easy math problem, that would leave us at 91-71.  I’d take that.

I certainly think that would be good enough to win the NL Central, and that’s all that really matters, right?  Well, the one thing I’m not liking about this year, besides the fact that we’re still at 500, is the streaky nature of this team, especially lately.  Lost 6 in a row, won 5 in a row, lost 4 in a row, before finally winning again on Sunday.  It’s this streaky nature that could sink us when it matters most.

Yes, you can say divisions aren’t won or lost in the first half of the season… not sure I would totally agree with you, but I would certainly say their best baseball is ahead of them.  But the streakiness, yeah, that’s what worries me.  Getting hot in the postseason would be ideal, but what about hitting one of those cold streaks.  One of those streaks where the Cubs forget how to hit, especially with runners in scoring position.  They are the worst team in the majors with RISP.  If they go cold, they would be out.  I am assuming of course we are in the playoffs, not necessarily a safe assumption at this point.  But didn’t this happen to us last year?

Not in the regular season, but certainly the postseason was no stroll in the park.  We had our cold streak against the Dodgers before we came back to win.  We had our poor start in the World Series before winning 3 straight.  Is it that streakiness that has followed the Cubs into this regular season?

In April, there were winning streaks of 3 and 4 games along with a losing streak of 4 games.  In May, there was a 3 game winning streak, a 4 game losing streak, another 3 game winning streak, followed by that 6 game skid to end the month.  And then there is this month:  a 5 game winning streak followed by a 4 game losing streak.  You could say the Cubs are getting streakier as the year goes on.  Anybody feeling like another win on Monday after Sunday’s W?

I guess I’d like to see more consistent play… consistent winning play.  I guess it doesn’t matter at the end of the day; however you reach that final win loss record isn’t important.  But, you know what I mean, right?

At 500 after 62 games, the Cubs have been the definition of average; they’ve been the fifty percenters thus far.  Will it take a 60% winning percentage from here on out to get it done?  What will be that magic number?

Keep on grinding I guess.  Keep getting better.  Keep playing hard.  KISS:  Keep It Simple Stupid.

It was relieving to see the Cubs salvage a win in that series on Sunday, achieving that 6-4 record.  Now repeat that 6-4 performance the rest of the year, and we’ll see the postseason for the 3rd straight year.  Easy.  Go Cubs!

The Cubs went streaking to finish their first 62 games. Lost 6, won 5, lost 4 before winning the last of the 4 game series with the rocks. So many guys underperforming. Nobody hitting with runners in scoring position. What does it add up to? A .500 ballclub. If you ask me, things could be worse. Could they be better? Sure, but I dont think we can complain based on the hangover and how guys have been playing. Keep grinding is right. Summer is right around the corner and so should the real Cubs. We keep waiting for more consistent play, but staying at or near the top of the nl central should put the Cubs in position to make the playoffs again. Is that all they want? Of course not. So while we wait for 60% winning or better, enjoy the wins, dont sweat the losses, and keep the hope that the Cubbies will have a whole lot more Ws coming this summer! GO CUBS GO!!!
