June 4, 2017: The Best Medicine

posted in: Cubs | 1

Not sure about you, but I feel a whole hell of a lot better.  Beating the Cardinals makes me feel good.  Sweeping the birds… fricking awesome.  Sweeping the birds after a 6 game losing streak; it’s the best medicine I could have asked for.

Cubs fans weren’t feeling too well after a brutal West Coast swing.  I wasn’t freaking out, but I was pissed, for sure.  Coming home to face St. Louis represented an important juncture of our season.  It’s the third-way point; Saturday’s game represented our 54th game of the year.  Winning on both Friday and Saturday, brought our 1/3 season record to 27-27.  Considering our play in this first third of the year, and considering we needed to win these two to get to 500, I was very happy.  I know none of us would have expected this to start the year…

Mr. Schwarber had the biggest moment in the game on Saturday; we’ll get to the Lester pickoff too.  His grand salami put the Cubs up for good, etching another come back win; all 3 games this weekend met that qualification.  Schwarby has been the center of attention as one of the main culprits to blame for the early season struggles.  He hasn’t been good, no doubt.  Joe moved him down to 2, then 7, then finally 9, where he was in the batting order for both the Saturday and Sunday games.  There are even folks talking about sending him back down…

I guess I don’t care.  I feel like he will be OK eventually; he’s working through some struggles.  A good point I heard was that his early season woes represent his first real struggles as a big leaguer.  He ripped through the minors, had a solid 2nd half in 2015, and then followed that up with a postseason for the ages.  Yes, he went through the mental struggle of recovering from his injury during 2016, but miraculously returned to earn more postseason hero points in helping the Cubs capture the World Series.  Now, in really only his 2nd season, the year of the sophomore slump, he’s struggling.  I think it’s a matter of “once he gets passed them” vs “will he?”; it’s only a matter of time there.

And then there was the pickoff move.  Love the St. Louis broadcast call of that.  “He will not throw over”… boom!  Were you as shocked as I was?  Is it really that hard to make a throw to first base?  Base runners beware!!!  The Jon Lester yips are gone!  We’ll see…

Then the Cubs took care of business on the ESPN sunday nighter, to complete the sweep, put them a game over 500, pull within 1 game of first place, and continue their undefeated June… with 7 more home games coming.  Ready for that run?

I am.  I think we all are.  I knew this moment was coming; I thought we were rolling last home stand.  Patience folks… patience.  Look, you waited your whole damn life to see a World Series, I think we can wait this out THIS season.

Still, beating the Cardinals is special.  Fowler, who led off the series with a home run, ended it with a strike out.  Yep, that’s about right.  Leaving the Cubs to join the Cardinals?  At least you got paid.  Next up, the 24-31 Marlins.  Let’s go Cubbies!!!

What 6 game losing streak? Hahaha. The Cubs returned to Wrigley for a weekend series vs the red turds and swept them right out of town. Buh-bye! Thanks for coming! How good did that sWeep feel? The Cubs needed it as I think their confidence was shaken a bit. Schwarby’s grand slam was awesome! Yes, he has struggled mightily, but he still has never played a full season in the bigs. He has exceeded and set high expectations early in his career, which is why his struggles are magnified now. He will work through them and get better. How can you not have him in the lineup? That bat, power, and fear factor for opposing pitchers is enough for me…get it going Schwarby! Lester finally threw to first base! Go figure…guy got picked off. Keep taking those huge leads…see what happens. All it takes is for Lester to do it once for guys to think twice. Now, the Cubs sit a game above .500 with the fish coming to town and only a game out of first. Time to make your move Cubbies. sWeep this homestand and never look back. Patience is a virtue. For Cubs fans, it had to be for 108 years. What’s a few months this year? GO CUBS GO!!!
