It’s fun to get lost in California. Drive down the coast from LA to beach town after beach town. Drive up the coast into the untouched natural beauty of Big Sur. Drive through the desert to the bright lights of Vegas. There is so much to do, so much to see, so much to enjoy in that big state. I don’t think the Cubs or the fans that were out there to support them on this road trip enjoyed themselves. The Cubs completed their 0-6 road trip in Southern California with a 2-1 loss to the last place San Diego Padres.
They’re didn’t even have that much to cheer about. From getting shutout twice at the start to racking up 3 hits in the finale; there is no other description for this road trip than ugly. Now I know I just got done telling you not to freak out; I stand by that still. But it’s certainly ok to be a little upset, a little frustrated.
The Cubs are better than this. I continue to believe this. There is nobody that can tell me any different, except that harsh reality that is the current win loss record. 25-27 through almost a third of the season. I don’t think anybody expected that. Maybe it’s the biggest World Series hangover in history that goes along with that breaking of the longest professional sports drought. You know there are things you can do to cure a hangover.
What can the Cubs do? We already know we have everything in the organization from the offense side of the ball; there is no need there yet, that is where the main struggles are. It’s not like Joe has a shortage of options there. Maybe it’s time to settle on a lineup for a while. All these pieces, and we haven’t quite found the right combination yet. It’s time to keep the guys on the field that are doing something, although for the most part this is a team wide slump.

Montero has been good; maybe he needs to be in that lineup more. But then that means Willson must move to left field, because he’s been seeing the ball pretty well; you don’t want to bench him. The corners in the infield should remain, but everything else can be up for grabs. Find that right combo Joe. Push those right buttons. It’s your turn to earn that money, and help these guys snap out of it. We keep thinking it’s going to happen soon.
We thought it happened on the last homestand, but then this? Not even one opportunity for the Cubs fans on the West Coast to fly the W flag! Maybe home cooking is what the doctor ordered. Thankfully, we have some of that coming up. A weekend series with the Red Birds will hopefully serve as the start of better things to come.
Still only 1.5 games out of first place in the weak NL Central means that it’s still all there in front of us. There’s no time like the present to start playing better ball. Game by game, inning by inning, pitch by pitch. Focus, work, grind. We’re better than this. We all know this. It’s time to start showing it. Go Cubs!

Panic time? No. Upsetting? Yes. There is too much damn talent on this Cubs team to be 2 games under .500. World Series hangover is right. But why not? It had been 108 years. If there is ever a team to have a hangover, it would be the Cubs. Not sure Joe would every stop tweaking his lineup until they start winning consistently. I think he is still searching for the right combo. A guy being switched here or there depending on matchups is fine, but until the Cubs get there, keep trying to find out what is going to work. Coming home to Wrigley should be a good thing. Hopefully, that home cooking will get things turned around. Stop the skid at 6. Keep working. Keep grinding. Keep that ugly play in Cali and come home to Chicago like the World Champs you are. GO CUBS GO!!!
