May 30, 2017: Freak Out Time

posted in: Cubs | 1

OK, I said I wasn’t going to freak out.  That sweep at the hand of the Dodgers; no sweat.  But now?!?  Losing the first 2 games to the Padres?!?!  On the brink of another sweep on the road?!?!  1 game under 500?!?!  It’s time… it’s freak out time!?!?

Just kidding.  Come on, seriously?  It’s the same story I’ve been telling.  The Cubs have been playing their worst baseball of the year, now through 51 games.  They are 1 game under 500, and a total of 1.5 games out of first.  Yes, that’s 1.5 games, not 15 games.  Yes, we are still in the month of May.  Yes, the Cubs are still the defending World Series champions.  People need to take a breath.

What do you suggest that the Cubs do?  We’re not going to acquire anybody on the offensive side of the ball.  We have plenty of guys there.  They are not hitting yet.  More specifically, they are not hitting with runners in scoring position.  The Cubs have left the 2nd most runners on base this year in the majors.  We are getting on base, we’re just not driving them in.  It’s kind of like in hockey, where that puck is shot off the post.  They’ll start going in eventually; we’ll start driving them in eventually.  I mean, 10 walks on Monday and 2 runs?!?!  It’s frustrating for sure, I’ll give you that.

I do think the Cubs need to acquire some pitching; that’s been no secret.  With our number five slot combo of Anderson and Butler giving us very little, and Lackey showing last year he wasn’t built for the postseason, we need an arm.  We’ll get an arm… for sure.  But, if we can’t count on Lester, Hendricks, and Arrieta, we will be in a tough spot.  You can’t totally overhaul the starting pitching in one year, and we don’t need to.  They haven’t been as good as the last 2 years; giving up the 2nd most runs in the majors in the 1st inning isn’t helping.  Is it that steep a drop off the cliff for the boys?  Don’t think so, but another arm is needed and will be welcomed at some point this year.

And most importantly, we just won the fricking World Series!!!!  And you’re freaking out????  Enjoy the ride man.  This ride has been bumpy so far, no doubt, but if there is any year, any team that we should believe in, it’s these Cubs.  From Theo to Joe to the players, they did it; they won it all last year.  They’ve proven that they are champions.  Can they do it again?  That question will be answered, but why not give them the benefit of the doubt for God’s sake since they just collectively ended the longest drought in pro-sports history and brought us all our 1st World Series championship ever.

People make me sick.  Doubt the Sox; they haven’t won in 11 years.  Doubt the Bulls; it’s been 19 years since the reign ended.  Doubt the Bears; it’s been 31 years now.  Leave the Hawks alone too; 3 Cups in this decade and we’re complaining?  Get a grip people.

The Cubs will be fine, one way or another.  Be patient and as the popular phrase goes, trust the process.  It already delivered us 1 World Series title.  There is no reason to doubt it now.  Go Cubs!

RELAX…back to back road sweeps is not good. Neither is losing 6 in a row, no matter how they happen. BUT the Cubs will be fine. June is just starting. Weather is warming. You have to figure that the Cubs hitters will, too. The pitching has not been great, especially in the first inning. Not easy digging out of a hole every game. The Cubs are still World Series champs! They need to be given the benefit of the doubt. Nobody is going to run away with the NL central unless it is the Cubs. Trust in Theo and Joe. They will do everything they can to get this team going. Ultimately, the rest falls on the players. They did it last year. They will turn it around this year, too. GO CUBS GO!!!
