Ok, ok…back to some Cubs talk. You know I could do that every day of the season…you know I could do that every day of the year. Don’t look now, but the Cubs are a half a game from taking their rightful position at the top of the Central.
It’s been a good home stand. I heard predictions of 8-2 and 7-3 for this 10 game home stand; neither of those will be right. That’s only because this past Saturday’s game against the Brewers got cancelled so this will only be a 9 game home stand. A 3-0 start against the Reds was fun. 1-1 vs the Brew Crew, and now 2-1 vs the Giants leaves us at 6-2 with one game being started by Eddie Butler remaining on Thursday afternoon.
Schwarby hit another moon shot. Rizzo is heating up. We’re getting some good pitching. The 2017 Cubs are showing signs of breaking out, and that’s bad for the rest of the NL Central.
I told you. The one thing about the Cubs bad play early this year is that they were still hovering around 500. And if that was the worst they could play, then that’s good news for us.
Yet, I’m stil excited to see what move Theo and company will make next to put this year’s team in the best possible position to win it all. Last year it was Chappy. I still think this year will be a big starting pitcher.

We’ve briefly talked about Quintana, who got shelled today by the way. Still don’t think that’s going to happen. Then there’s Chris Archer. I love that kid. We did trade him back in the day if you recall. He was part of the deal to bring Matt Garza to the North Side back in 2011; not our finest moment. The kid is still only 28, and is a top flight starter in my mind. I’d love to see him towing the rubber in Wrigley, but it will cost us. If he is the guy we want, we’re going to have to ante up. Maybe there is another option.
Anybody know Sonny Gray? He was a breakout pitcher a few years ago, and was an all star in 2015. Last year, his season was a wash due to injuries. He’s finally back pitching, and his last few games have been impressive. I took note and have already claimed him on the fantasy baseball waiver wire; I wonder if the Cubs are too.
At the age of 27, he is still young. And then there’s that team he’s on, the Oakland Athletics. The Cubs and A’s made a pretty good deal a couple years back, so maybe there are some good relationships there. Although, the result of that trade that brought Addison Russell to SS in Wrigley for the next decade turned out to be so lopsided, maybe not. Still, something to keep an eye on in my opinion. I’m sure Theo and company are already a step ahead.
The Cubs could be back in first place after the action comes to an end on Thursday. Joe has his hands full keeping everybody happy with ABs with still more guys knocking in the minors. That job may become a little easier eventually, while improving the starting rotation substantially. Stay tuned. I know you will. The 2017 Cubs are coming… Go Cubs!

Cubs had a great home stand and left Wrigley back in first place. Joe continues to juggle all of his offensive pieces as the pitching starts to look better. What will the Cubs need at the deadline? Seems like another big starter. With all of the young offensive talent, some of it may not be around in 2 months as it will be used to get that big starter. Just as Joe juggles his lineups on a daily basis, Theo will be doing the same with this roster to make sure the Cubs are ready for a summer run into the postseason. sWeet homestand Cubbies…time to head west. GO CUBS GO!!!
