May 23, 2017: Getting Their Guy

posted in: White Sox | 1

Luis Robert.  Never trust a guy with two first names.  Ok, so that did not factor in the White Sox pursuit of the next big Cuban signing.  The Sox got ther guy, signing the 19 year old Cuban to a deal that could end up being close to 30 million dollars.  I think it was a great move.

They beat out the Cardinals, who were suspected to be the other team with serious interest; bravo for that Hahn.  The Cards are pretty decent at talent evaluation, so the fact that they were the other team in the conversation, bodes well I think.  The Cubs weren’t involved…that could be a bad sign, or more likely, just a confirmation of the lack of need in the position player area.  That is a big area of need for the Sox.

And he’s 19.  He’s so young, making sense with the whole rebuild concept.  This guy can get some seasoning in the minors, and be ready to contribute in 2-3 years.  He looks to move into the third best prospect ranking in the White Sox system behind Moncada and Kopech.  I’d have to imagine this pushes the Sox farm system ranking that much closer to the top.  They are stacking the cupboards.

The Sox do have a pretty good history of Cuban players.  Minnie Minoso was no slouch.  I dedicated a blog to him a couple years ago here:  http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/march-1-2015-the-cuban-comet/.  And oh yeah, they have a pretty good one on the team now in Jose Abreu, who supposedly helped Robert in making his decision.  Nice job Jose.

Yeah, you can doubt that this kid will amount to anything, but you have to applaud the effort.  I would be very excited if I were a Sox fan.  The only thing I would be anxious about is moving some more of the players on the team now.  I think this trade deadline will bring back some more young talent to the White Sox system.  If that’s the case, then I think the Sox would be on their way.  They’re still making great strides.

Yes, Sox fans may be relegated to watching the minor league games, like us Cubs fans had to do for a while, but I don’t hear any of us complaining about that now.  I remember getting crap for that…from Sox fans.  Now, it’s time to embrace that, and look forward to a promising future instead of what the last 11 years have held since their World Series title.

Will it all come together for the Sox?  Will things fall into place, while getting a little lucky, in expediting the rebuild like the Cubs?  Nobody really knows, but I think they’re on the right track.  That has to be refreshing to see on the South Side.

Great job Rick in getting your guy.  You’ve stepped up and paid the piper for the guy you think will be a difference maker in the Sox future.  Nothing but respect for that.  Time will tell what the results truly are, but the grade at this point has to be A+.  The next Cuban Comet?  We may have to wait 2 years to see it, but that would be good; that would be very good.

The sox paid a lot of money for a 19 year old guy who may not pan out. Will it be worth it? Will this guy end up helping the sox in the future? I sure hope so for the money they paid. I am glad that the sox got him instead of the red turds. The sox are taking a risk hoping it will turn to gold in the near future. If it does, hahn is a genius. If it does not, hahn might not be around to pick up the pieces. At the end of the day, hahn and the sox need to make risky moves to turn things around. This might be a key piece…maybe.
