We missed the first home run. We were on a nacho run, and the line was ridiculously long. They weren’t particularly in any hurry either. We decided to wait in the line once my son found 2 buddies to run around with; their parents were waiting in line too. It was the 2 brothers in Cardinals’ gear and my son in Cubs gear, playing tag in this open area by the nacho stand. We heard the roar, and I checked; Contreras had went deep. It was the start of a big night for him.
I did see the second one. Soon after the second one, a young Cardinals fan came up to me asking who had hit the first home run. I swear it was a ploy by the kids’ parents, trying to prove that Cubs fans didn’t even know what happened in the game. Little did they know who they were coming up to… Like I said, we were in the nacho line, but I was following the game on my phone while in line. Although it is hard with my young son, I don’t like to miss a minute of the game that I’m at. Another Cardinals fan walked by and said “I think he likes this stadium”; I agreed, remembering the home run on Opening Night that tied the game in the 9th. Then I said, now only if he could hit in the other stadiums… haha.
I watched Tommy go deep… waiting to see if the ball had actually left the yard; it did. Then we saw some fireworks when Grichuk took Edwards deep. He struggled on this evening, leaving the game with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs; it was a critical juncture of the game. And then it happened… the play of the game.
Contreras fired down to pick the runner off 1st base; we’ve seen this before. But… but… it was the runner who we picked off that made this even sweeter. Dexter Fowler, the big Cardinals offseason addition, our “you go we go” guy, got tagged out easily by Rizzo after a perfect strike from Willson. It was beautiful. I had to say something.

I certainly caught some rough looks after that outburst. After simply cheering by clapping & fist pumping most of the game, I finally made my presence known. I knew, at that point, that the Cubs better win that game, or I was going to get some of that thrown right back in my face. My son looked up at me, already delirious from being up late, while my wife high fived me; it was all good.
The game didn’t end smoothly either. With a 2 out walk and stolen base, and the tying run at the plate, it got a bit more interesting. Wade struck him out with one in the dirt, and Willson fired another strike down to first. It may have been a bit high, but Rizzo should have had it. As he extended his arm up to catch it, it deflected off his glove down the right field line. Now it was a 3-2 game, with the tying run at 2nd, and winning run at the plate in the form of pinch hitter Fat Adams. He struck out and the Cubs got the win.
All I could think about when Rizzo missed that ball was the catch to end the World Series. Imagine if it had ricocheted off his glove that night… no thanks, I’m good. It was much easier seeing it happen on this evening, especially after a quick 3 pitch strike out to end it.
Yep, the game was over. We were bringing home the W. Cubs win, Cubs win.

Contreras loves playing in red turd busch stadium. 2 bombs and picking off fowler…oh thank you! Fall asleep dex? Not going anywhere with someone on 2nd. Must have took a temporary nap at the wrong time. What a play! Cubs get the series opening W that you got to bring home.
Thought the same exact thing when Rizzo missed that ball. Guess some things never change being a Cubs fan…hahaha, the what ifs continue but so does being World Series Champs! The Cubs may not be playing like it, but the grind is long. Be patient. That’s Cub is around the corner!
