May 11, 2017: Meet Me in St. Louis

posted in: Cubs | 2

Did you miss me?  Probably never even knew I was gone.  Well I was; and now I’m back… and it’s time to catch up.  So… I figured I’d do a multi-part blog summarizing what I was doing these past handful of days… and yes, it is Chicago sports related.  My family made the trek down I-55 to St. Louis to watch the Cubs play the Cards; meet me in St. Louis!

I wanted to leave earlier than Thursday afternoon, but my son is in school now… so we had to wait until he was out.  We could have pulled him out of class I guess; I wanted to.  But nope, my wife was not having it.  It was probably the better decision.  I can’t remember my parents ever pulling me out of school for some vacation related reason.  This year, it wasn’t bad, because my son only goes 3 days per week… but then I was thinking about next year… and the next 12 years.  Going Monday-Friday every week, we’re going to be extremely limited on any vacation plans during the school year.  My buddy from work just got back from Portland, and I thought, a Bulls Blazers game in Portland would be sweet… but that would be during the school year.  There is always spring break…

So getting out of Chicago at 3pm was not the greatest; it was a little better than I expected.  But that damn construction seems to follow me wherever I go.  We ran into some that put us down to 1 lane somewhere past Springfield later in the evening; that cost us about 30 minutes easy.  We had to stop to eat of course, and Steak & Shake fit the bill; love that place.  Kids eat free, and with all the meals under $4… when we looked at the bill, and saw $9.49, we were amazed.  That’s damn cheap eatings…

All in all, it was about 6 hours.  We arrived just in time to change and enjoy the hotel pool for about 30 minutes.  That was always one of the highlights for me growing up going on family vacations; time in the pool!  I think that’s how I learned to swim… my dad just threw me in one day…  haha.  Ok, maybe not that drastic, but I swear I learned to swim on our many vacations.  Well, my son is a bit ahead of the game there, taking swimming classes since he was 18 months old… on that Michael Phelps track!  So I didn’t have to throw him in and teach him; he jumped in and can almost do it all by himself.  It’s still not 100% yet… can’t veer too far from him in the pool.  We all enjoyed a bit of family swim before we went back to the room for the night.

OK, I guess I’ll get to the Chicago sports angle in the next edition.  We did have plans before the Cubs game on Friday night; that’s where the Cubs Cards rivalry starting surfacing.  All I brought was Cubs stuff to wear… no wait, I did bring a Bears t-shirt too.  Representing Chicago and our teams is a must on any vacation, especially one where a game is involved.  As it turns out, I’m glad we ended up going to Friday night’s game, and not any of the other two; it’s always good to be there for a road win…  a lot better walking out of that opposing stadium… as long as you’re not running your mouth too much… and I wasn’t… not too much.  Game day is next.

Traffic sucks. Construction is a constant. Road trip vacations are great, especially when headed to see a Chicago team play. Getting to the hotel and relaxing in the pool is a must, especially with kids. Love to wear the Chicago gear out of town, too. So many transplants and Chicago fans no matter where you go. Leaving an opposing stadium a loser is not easy. Glad you got to see the W…details next, please.
