I’m not saying the Cubs have been sleep walking thus far through the season, but maybe they do need a wake up call. Maybe the Yankees provided that this weekend.
It’s not going to be easy; nobody said it would be. Coming off the highest of highs to be back at the starting line again, is a mental adjustment. To be the champs, and have everybody gunning at you is something this Cubs team better get used to. Teams are using them as a measuring stick for their own place in the league; that’s what you do against the champs. How good are we?
Between the 2 AL east teams we’ve played thus far, we’re 1-5, making up 2 of the 3 series losses this year. Both could be potential World Series teams representing the AL. Both played us very well. What is the Cubs measuring stick?
It has to be ourselves. It can’t be trying to match last year’s team step for step; that is not going to happen. It has to be exploring how good THIS team can be. We have to find challenges within every series, game, inning, and pitch. Maybe it’s a bit of a mental snooze the Cubs are enjoying now? Relaxing the brain after the highest stress of all. How long can we continue to say that? It’s May 7th.
I’m still not worried though. The Cubs are not playing their best baseball; we know they eventually will. They’ll eventually rip off some winning streaks. They’ll eventually distance themselves from the pack. Right?

It doesn’t mean that there are no moves required. The Brett Anderson experiment should be over. Headed to the DL, maybe he gets another shot? I’d like to see Eddie Butler get his shot. It’s time to evaluate what we have; I think our biggest need at this point is starting pitching.
Nobody has been that great, struggling to get out of the first inning, leading the league in runs given up. To start every game behind the 8 ball is not fun. The Cubs have come back many times, just like they did Sunday night against Chappy. Still, falling behind game after game is not the way to go. Who we worried about?
Lester, Arrieta, and Hendricks have to be the guys; I think they will be. I already talked about the number five spot, and then there’s Lackey. It’s his last year. He was OK last year. He didn’t come through in the playoffs like I thought he would. I can’t trust him. Unless Eddie Butler is a revelation, and even it he is, I think the time at the trade deadline this year will be spent acquiring a very good starting pitcher; someone we can slot at #4… at least. Somebody who could be a top half of the rotation guy; not sure if Jake will be here next year. We have the assets; I’m not going to go player by player here, but the cupboard is still full on the offensive side of the ball. Let’s acquire that big arm that will give us that push this year, while at the same time, help us going forward.
Trust in Theo is a given now… now that he’s brought us the Holy Grail. It’s not time to panic, but it’s always time to look to improve. I’m sure he is. I’m sure the Cubs will. Onto game #32…

No time to worry but the Cubs need to wake up and get things in gear. Their play at Wrigley has not been good. Their starting pitching has not been good, especially early in games. The Cubs are talented and deep offensively, but they cannot keep putting themselves in a hole…see Bhawks! Just relax, embrace the target on their backs, and play ball. The Cubs will win a lot of games. They will have some solid winning streaks. They have yet to find a groove and remain right there for first in the nl central. Winning 100 games would be nice, but all the Cubs really need to do is win their division…bottom line. We can worry about who to acquire in a couple months. Right now, just get back to playing good defense, starters going 6 strong, and the offense hitting like we know they can. No need for guys to carry the load…do it together. A home sweep at the hands of the yanks should wake the Cubs up. This is no cake walk. This is an uphill, 162 game grind…all year long. Relax and find that stride.
GO CUBS GO!!!
