May 6, 2017: The Debut

I wasn’t sure.  He’s only 5 years old.  Yeah, why not.  It was a few weeks ago that I signed my son up for his first baseball league.

You can’t beat the value.  Last year, I did the whole lil sluggers thing.  It wasn’t cheap, but it was a lot of fun.  We did 2 sessions: one in the summer and one in the fall.  It worked out perfectly time wise, with the Cubs playing late in the year; the fall session ended the last week of October.  The weather cooperated too for the most part.

But this year will be different.  He’ll get drafted to be on a team; hoping it’s not the Cardinals.  We’ll be playing baseball a minimum of two times per week between practice and games.  By the end of the summer, he should be pretty good at this whole baseball thing, but more importantly, hoping he enjoyed his summer on the field.

Saturday was the debut…in practice.  I was worried because he’s not that great at catching yet; he can hit, although  he will need practice off the tee, and he can definitely throw.  I was worried for nothing.  There was a ton of kids there; it’ll be close to 50 kids in this league.  The age range is 4-6, with the majority of the kids being 5 years old.  This is going to be fun.

I remember my debut.  No, not my first practice, although thinking about it, I believe it was in the Boys Club gym; I was 6 years old.  Yeah, I do remember.  I remember this kid throwing the ball wildly around the gym.  More memorable than that, was my first game.

If I remember correctly, it was 5 innings off the cone and 2 innings of pitching.  My first game they put me at pitcher…when the other team was hitting off the cone.  I’m guessing that’s where you put your worst players.  Since it was my first game and I’m pretty sure I was the youngest on that team, that’s where I ended up.

Thinking back, I was a sitting duck; the closest position to home plate, and kids teeing off on the ball off the cone.  And it’s not like I was actually expecting the ball to be hit to me.  Well, it was, and I took a line drive right off the chin.  I was knocked out cold.  Next thing I know, I woke up in the dugout with an ice pack on my chin.  The baseball had left its seams impression right on my chin.  My mom was freaking out; it could have been my first and last game.  I didn’t make it back on the field that day, but I was back out there for the next 10 years or so.  It was an awesome time playing baseball all those years.

I guess that’s the most I can ask for, that my son enjoys the heck out of it.  Yeah, if he ended up being really good, and making the pros, I wouldn’t complain, but I hope to give him the memories that I had playing this great game.

So the first practice is in the books, with the first game scheduled for the first Saturday in June.  I’m kind of hoping it’s not as memorable as my first game, unless we’re talking about him hitting a home run or something like that.  I’m pretty excited, and more importantly, he seems like he is too.  After his first practice, I asked him if he wanted to go to the playground.  We eventually did, but first, he wanted to throw some more ground balls with me.  And we did.

Exciting stuff. With all the years we spent playing baseball, it only makes sense for our kids to do the same. So many good times and baseball memories that we hope our kids can have as well. This is the first step. We have the knowledge to teach and watch as they get bigger and better. How cool it would be for it to go somewhere further than we took it! Baby steps first. Throw, catch, hit. Lay the foundation but make sure they have fun!
