I’m proud to say that Chicago has the best Little League team in America. They beat Las Vegas yesterday to win the US championship, and advance to meet South Korea in the World Final. I’m sure everyone thought mighty Vegas was going to win yesterday, and I’m sure everyone thinks mighty South Korea will win today, and that’s OK. These kids don’t mind being the underdogs.
I watched the first couple innings of yesterday’s game. Vegas loaded the bases with no outs in the first. The next 2 batters struck out and popped up. The last batter, one of the shortest kids on the Vegas team, hit a line drive to straight away center that cleared the CFs head. All 3 runs scored, and Vegas was up 3-0. Here we go again. The best part about that whole play was when Chicago was coming off the field. Their coach went up to their CF and told him: It’s my fault. Although the ball was catchable in my opinion, it was the coach that brought the OFers in because of the idea that the kid up to bat couldn’t hit it that far. Regardless of whose “fault” it was (which really doesn’t matter at the end of the day), the coach took the blame, and that’s just what he needed to do. These Chicago kids battled right back. The inning started with a walk and a HR to cut it to 3-2. They went on to score one more run to tie it, and eventually took the lead in the 2nd inning. That’s where I left off. I read Chicago came back again, after Vegas took a 5-4 lead, and eventually won 7-5. The resiliency of these kids… let me say it again, the resiliency of these KIDS is amazing. No quit ever. They lost to this team last time by 11 runs, but did that matter. Does it matter that the whole South Korea team towers over them? What do you think…
If Chicago can win today, this will be the first Little League championship for us. It’s impressive in a number of ways, including the fact that here in Chicago, we can’t play baseball year round. We have a little something called winter that prevents this. While other teams out West and down South are playing ball in December & January, these kids are inside keeping warm. I’m not sure what the climate is in South Korea, but we’ve shown that it doesn’t matter. It’s impressive that they are doing all this at 12-13 years old. What were you doing at 12-13 years old? The pressure, the amount of coverage and social media attention that EVERY event gets nowadays, and these kids just keep doing what they’re doing. That’s a testament not only to the kids, but to the coaches. They are doing a phenomenal job with these kids. It’s truly a team effort, and this is the team that did it the best in the USA this year.

They flashed across the screen the names of Kirby Puckett, Curtis Granderson, and Jason Kipnis, all from the Chicago area. There have been many great athletes from Chicago, including 2 more on display on the USA basketball team, in Derrick Rose and Anthony Davis. Athlete or not, any of us from Chicago have to be proud. It’s been proven too. The ratings for these Chicago Little League games have been higher than both the Sox and the Cubs games; go figure. There’s even multiple viewing parties going on in the city to watch their games. I hope the Cubs and the Sox are paying attention and taking notes, on what happens when a team from Chicago does well; everybody gets behind and supports them. We already know that. I didn’t know how well this team from Chicago was doing until the made the Lilttle League World Series, but now that they did, I’m fully behind them. The rest of the city is too.
So clear your calendar for 2pm today. What are you going to watch instead? This team is battling to be the Best Little League team in the World. This could be a first for a Chicago team. Need I say more. One time boys, one time.

Sox lost me for a couple games. JRW was awesome all week! They lost to a national all star team, not just a little league team from the neighborhood. They recruit from an entire country and play together all year. If the USA did that, they’d have no chance!
Congrats to our JRW team even in defeat. They played like professionals. Kept their game faces on even after the Nevada win! Limited smiles. Eyes were still on the prize. Loved it!
