May 3, 2017: Rebuild Version 2.0

How are the Sox doing in their rebuilding year so far?  Too good for some people.  Could their success this year hurt the process?

I remember being in this position with the Cubs.  They were showing signs.  The year was 2014. I thought they had a shot that year.  Then, they go ahead and trade Samardzija and Hammel.  I wasn’t that happy.  We ended up with 89 losses that year; not bad after 96 and 101 the previous two years.  It would be the last losing record for the Cubs… when will the next one be?

How many wins does a manager buy you?  I think the Cubs manager that year did a good job; he was an improvement over what we had and was as advertised, good with the young guys.  He’s the same guy who is managing the White Sox this year.

The Sox made some moves this offseason that turned their farm system from bottom ranked to top ranked.  Trading Adam Eaton was a haul;  oh yeah, and now he’s done for the year.  Trading Sale was huge; huge because of the prospects they got, but also because of the type of pitcher they let go.  The Sox appeared to be ready for the complete tear down.

84 losses last year wasn’t so bad.  Did they really need the complete rebuild like the Cubs needed?  Would they even want to follow the script used by their cross town rivals?  What is the next step?

It appeared more like a rebuild than the typical retool that the Sox typically run. It was what was needed I thought.  But now what?  They need to move more guys.  Period.

Forget the good start; it’s a tease. Yes, the manager has and will help that; big improvement over Robin.  But they’re not ready.  The best part about their hot start should be the increase in value for some of the other pieces, although is that really the case?

That may be true for Robertson, but can’t say the same for Frazier and Quintana.  Frazier is in the way at this point, with long time prospect Matt Davidson finally looking like he’s ready; well, ready for a good hard look at least.  Then there’s Quintana.  I wouldn’t be too worried about him.  He’s a stud, regardless of some early struggles.  These 3 guys should go, no?

Rodon will not be back for a while, and the other young guys they already got will only wet their feet this year.  This should be year 1 of the rebuild version 2.0, not year 12 of the good but not good enough run.

Maybe it will be.  Maybe the Sox are waiting for the trade deadline to maximize value.  Quintana to the Cubs for some prospects makes a whole hell of a lot of sense, if the Sox could get past trading with the Cubs.  But what if the Sox keep it up?  They certainly won’t win the division, but wild card may not be too far fetched, but isn’t that what is said every year?  How will this year be different?

There is no one size fits all plan to win a World Series.  Yes, the Cubs rebuild, World Series title, and very bright future is the plan of the day, but like I said, I’m sure the Sox don’t want to follow it…because it’s the Cubs.  They want to win it their way, plus there are no guarantees with any route.  Still, I think the best bet is to keep moving guys and keep stock piling young talent.  But that’s a Cub fan telling the White Sox what they should do, and Sox fans don’t want to hear that.  Good luck with whatever route you choose.  If chosen wisely, we may yet get to see that cross town World Series.  We’ll be waiting.
