Like we needed more bad news after the Blackhawks got swept. Sitting at work, and I see the news come across. Rondo out indefinitely with a fractured thumb. Just when the Bulls started clicking…
They arguably played their best 2 games of the year in Boston, which led to this 2-0 series lead. It’s been Butler, it’s been the rebounding, it was Portis in Game 1, Zipser in Game 2, and Rondo. Rondo! Yeah, the same guy that was benched earlier in the year. He had a great game 2 in Boston. He has become the key to the offense running and seems to have the Celtic plays in his head on defense. So when he got hurt, I said ok… Well, now Hoiberg can stay home and Rondo could coach us from here on out. They were both in street clothes for Game 3 at the UC.
It started off like many Bulls games did this year. This was much more familiar to me than the first two games in Boston. They were down 20 in the blink of an eye. They clawed back to within 3 at the half, and you thought they would continue that once the teams returned to the court after halftime. It didn’t happen. The Celts cut the series lead in half with a big game on Sunday next.
The Celtics coach, Brad Stevens, made the first adjustment of the series. He benched Amir Johnson in favor of Gerald Green. Amir barely played, while Green didn’t light it up by any imagination, but played a solid 20 minutes in helping Boston get back in the series. I always liked this Celtics coach; I’ve never liked ours.

But you have to give him some credit for the first two games, right? You can. I will if we win this series. It’s his turn now…to make an adjustment. Jimmy didn’t play well in this one; that’s never a good thing. He needs to be Jimmy for us to keep this series lead. Wade was solid in this one; does he need to have one of his vintage playoff performances in the next couple games to lead us to a victory? Who else will step up? It was Portis then Zipser, then nobody. I think this is where Fredberg comes in. He needs to find that guy…that third guy who will step up. It may be somebody different in each game. He needs to figure out who that is, and put them in a position to do so, aka play them some serious minutes. The PGs replacing Rondo were horrible; you’d love for it to be one of them. Niko hasn’t cracked more than 13 points in any game; it’d be nice to see him have a 20-25 point outburst. Or, maybe it’s somebody else; Denzel Valentine anybody?
It’s all about how we got here. Before the series, you tell me we’d be sitting up 2-1, I’d take it all day. After winning the first two, then losing like this? I don’t have that same feeling. I want to say the wheels will completely fall off now, and the Bulls won’t win another game; maybe I need to get back to that reverse psychology. The minute I start thinking positive about this team….
Or does this series now hinge on the Rondo effect? Again, just crazy to say that after the year has went for him, but it just might be crazy enough to be true. Sure missed him in Game 3; sure doesn’t look like he’ll be back. You ready for Game 4? After this one, I’d want to get back on the court as soon as possible. See you Sunday. Go Bulls!

Wow, who knew rondo going down would hurt the Bulls this bad? I mean, here is a guy who was brought in to be part of the Bulls “big 3.” Ends up showing deteriorating skills and gets benched, even not playing some games. He plays like the celts’ rondo from years ago in games 1 and 2 leading the Bulls to road wins. Now, he is hurt and out indefinitely. Fredberg has no clue what to do now, like he has all year. No consistent bench time. No consistent offense without rondo running things…just a big mess, which is what the Bulls gave us in game 3. Buckets cannot disappear like he did in game 3. He is the man for the Bulls and needs to play like that. I expect big things from him in game 4. I also expect the Bulls to bounceback and play better. Will it be enough to put a stranglehold on this series? Stay tuned…
GO BULLS!!!
