March 30, 2017: The Joy of the Bulls

posted in: Bulls | 1

Maybe I should rephrase this…  The joy of the TNT Bulls.  Now, with a win over the Cavs on this Thursday night at the UC, the Bulls have won 20 straight games of this variety.  Amazing, simply amazing…

I should be happy about this, yes?  Us Bulls fans should be happy; we need to embrace the joy of the Bulls.  After all, this time the Cavs actually played their guys.  What does it all mean though?  The TNT streak, the sweeping of the season series against the Cavs this year; where does this leave us?

Honestly, I wasn’t zoned into this game. So when I got a text from my Dad saying “216”, I pulled up the guide to see what was on that channel.  Once I saw, I immediately switched; it was MJs 69 point game against these same Cavs from 1990.

My son asked me “Is that Michael Jordan?”  I said “Yes it is.”  As I switched back to the current version, he let me know that he wanted to watch Michael Jordan.  All those YouTube videos, and my lessons about the GOAT had paid off.  I was a proud papa.  You think I could refuse that request?  Of course not, and honestly, I’d rather watch that game too.

The game ironically enough was originally aired on TNT; sorry, it was a Wednesday night and the game was played in old Richfield Coliseum in Cleveland.  Who knows?  Maybe 5 year old Lebron was watching this game back in his hometown.  The best part of this replay was the broadcast.  No, unfortunately it wasn’t Durham and Kerr; it was the Cleveland radio guy.  One guy, who presented a whole different perspective on this all time great performance by our MJ

When Jordan was whistled for a foul call, he couldn’t believe it.  He couldn’t believe that it was only his second foul.  He said if Jordan had been a mere mortal, he would have fouled out of the game by now; I got a kick out of that one.  As Jordan continued to pour in points, he knew it had the potential to be a special night.  The Richfield Coliseum record of 50 points was shattered.  Jordan’s regular season record of 61 fell by the way side, as did his playoff career high of 63.  He kept saying how Jordan was really focusing in.  Yeah, he did that.

My son high fived me when Mike would make a bucket.  He only did that a few times, until he started to doze off.  He also told me who his favorite Bulls players were:  Michael Jordan, Jimmy Buter, and, after a couple buckets of his own in this 1990 replay, Horace Grant.  2 out of 3 ain’t bad.  Haha.

And Buckets wasn’t too bad on this evening either.  Neither was Niko, who has been magic lately.  One of the worst three point shooting teams in the NBA has turned into a juggernaut, with 10 three pointers in 5 straight games….maybe it was 3 straight.  Either way, it was pretty remarkable, and I’m pretty sure, not sustainable.  But we’ll take any dose of joy that these Bulls will provide.

Sorry that I feel that it’s a sham; this whole Bulls season that is.  It’s hard for me to get too excited; it’s hard for me to feel joy.  Not so hard to feel that watching MJ play; some things never change.

And just after I moved my son to his bed, I turned back on the TV and there he was again. It was the 1991 Finals Game 5 replay.  You want to talk about joy?

But I can’t stay in my Uncle Rico zone.  And as I flip over to the standings, the Bulls still sit one game out of the playoffs with seven games to go.  Will they or won’t they make the playoffs?  We’ll know soon enough.  Until then, enjoy all those joys both past and present.  And maybe, just maybe, we’ll have some to look forward to in the near future.  Go Bulls!

Any MJ highlight or game is so much better than this Bulls season. But what do you know, the Bulls win on tnt thursday night again and sweep the cavs 4-0 this season. How nice would that sound if it were in the playoffs? Hahaha…playoffs? Playoffs? Yep, look who is fighting their way back into the race. The Bulls are finding some momentum and making a push to grab a playoff spot. If it happens, what will come of it? I guess it will be viewed as a good thing and surprise based on where the Bulls were a week or two ago. From starting the season thinking the Bulls would be a playoff lock to writing them off for good a week ago, I now think that they have a shot to sneak in. If they do, I hope they make some damn noise, especially if they get lequeen and his cavs. 4-0 sweep? Yeah, enjoy the regular season success and hope it carries forward! GO BULLS!!!
