9 days away from the start of the regular season, so I guess we can start talking some baseball; it beats talking about the Bulls Sixers game…
How’s everybody feeling out there? Cubs repeat? Sox rebuild going OK? How will 2017 shape up?
I got a Sports Illustrated subscription for Christmas. I just received the Kris Bryant cover baseball preview. SI has the Dodgers over the Indians in the World Series. I guess it’s possible. Not the 2 teams I would pick to be there…
They had the Cubs winning 95 games, and bowing out to the Dodgers in their NLCS rematch. They predict the Sox to win a whole 65 games. I don’t like those predictions either.
I’m OK with the Cubs win total. I think mid-90s is fair, although I think they could win 100 again. There is always some surprise team, but I’m thinking it’ll be the usual suspects in the NL. Dodgers, Giants, Nationals, Mets, (NOT Cardinals), will all be in the mix. I hope the Cardinals really suck this year, although you just know they’ll be decent, and would love nothing more than to be a thorn in the defending champs side; man, that will never get old… you know… saying that… defending champs. Suck it Cardinals!
The Sox on the other hand… I think they can win 70. Yes, they did lose their best pitcher, and one of their best offensive stars, but I still think they can be decent. But that’s not what a rebuild is supposed to be right? Well, at least not according to the Cubs rebuild plan which resulted in a World Series title in year 5. There is no exact blue print for this; for the Cubs plan to cash in, there were a lot of things that had to go right. Still, I thought the Sox would have done more to expedite the rebuild.

Quintana is still here… as is Frazier, Robertson… all guys I thought would be gone. They still might be. These could be some nice pieces come trade deadline time; maybe that’s what Hahn has in mind. He surely got over on the Eaton deal, and broke even on the Sale deal maybe. If he can get max value out of those guys, that would go a long way in turning this thing around on the south side.
Or, maybe a Sox fan worst nightmare, the Sox are a 500 team come trade deadline. Ah, I remember when the Cubs were in that spot; I hated it too. I liked the fact that we were close to 500 considering the seasons we had previously, but then for the Cubs to trade away 2 of our starters? At the time, it was frustrating as hell. But looking back, it’s easy to say it was genius. But back to the Sox…
Being 500 this year would be a great year, or would it be? It would sort of be status quo for the Sox. Just good enough, not bad enough to blow it all up. Hanging around there in the middle, teasing… That’s the chance you take by holding on to these guys. Or, maybe the Sox can be in first place at the break, and get into the playoffs this year in the hybrid retool plan?
It will certainly be interesting to see how things develop for the Sox. It will certainly be fun to see the Cubs try to repeat. With over 108 years of pressure gone, it will be fun to see them go out and play. I’m not just saying this because I love the Cubs, but I seriously do think they can win another 100 games, and win the World Series again. OK, maybe I am saying it because I love the Cubs. Man, this is a great time to be a Cubs fan.
Yes, so the regular season is almost here. I’ll say what I say every year, and that’s that I love baseball. I can’t wait for the season to start up, especially this one. There is still some other business to take care of in the UC though, and I’m not talking about the Bulls. How long will the Blackhawks be playing into the baseball season?

Cubs 101-61…just don’t see how they don’t win 100+ again unless injuries ravage them and everybody has a 2016 heyward year. The Cubs are built to last and should be right in the thick of the playoff and World Series hunt again. Can they go back to back? Yes they can. It has only happened once in the nl in the last 95 years, but streaks are made to be broken, just as the Cubs broke the biggest one last year. 2 in 109 sounds good…hahaha.
sox 75-87…the sox have some young pieces to go along with some vets who will be trading blocks come deadline time. I think the sox are on the right track to rebuilding and should be better than people think. A few games below .500 sound about right to me. No playoffs but they land some more young talent and picks at the deadline as they try to rebuild back to a winner.
