The Bulls were over, the Blackhawks were over, what else was there to do on a Saturday night? There’s this little thing going on called the World Baseball Classic. It’s baseball on the world stage; you interested?
When I tuned in on Saturday night, the guy at the plate looked familiar. It was Javy Baez, I believe, the only Cub playing in this tourney. And he got hit by a pitch! Perfect timing. Thankfully, it was nothing, but it could have been something. He could have been out for a good portion of the season. That wasn’t the case, and in the Cubs case, even if it was, we’d still be OK for a while with our depth. But have you seen him playing in this tournament?
Well, on this evening, after getting hit by a pitch, he proceeded to steal 2nd and 3rd base. The kid is electric. He hit a towering bomb earlier in the tournament, and then he applied one of his patented tags, pointing to the catcher, celebrating the out, no look tagging the runner, all in one motion. We know this dude can play. He makes the spectacular look routine at times.
There have been other spectacular plays, such as Stanton’s home run, or did you see the catch by Adam Jones?
This tournament in general has been pretty cool. I haven’t been locked in by any means, but I’ve been paying attention. Some of the games have been pretty electric. Baez and Puerto Rico have been the best team thus far. It will continue for another week before the winner is crowned. Not everybody is playing in it.

There are a lot of players that chose not to play, like some of the best like Trout, Kershaw, and our own, Kris Bryant. Trout has already gone on record saying that he’s IN for the next go around, after seeing how these games have been. For Trout, it will be the closest thing to playing in the playoffs, since the Angels are not close. I’d be OK with Bryant playing in it, although I wouldn’t rank a WBC title higher than a World Series title.
Seeing the Cubs win the World Series was the pinnacle; nothing can beat it. I guess being that selfish Chicago fan, I would prefer a Chicago championship in any sport over any US title, gold medal, etc. We were lucky enough to get both back in the day.
Seeing the Bulls rule the 90s, and the US rule in basketball in the Olympics, was all good. The Hawks have reigned recently, but the US has not been able to bring home the gold yet. I’m sure it’s on Kane’s bucket list, but don’t think he or anybody would be offering to trade their Stanley Cup in any time soon; maybe some would? I wouldn’t.
No, I would root for the US in any competition, but not harder than I root for my Chicago teams. I’m sure a lot of people feel differently. Seeing these teams give it their all in this tournament, is really cool. As it gets closer to the finals, maybe I will try to tune in more. With the Blackhawks and Bulls, and now March Madness, the viewing competition is pretty stiff; OK, maybe not so much for the Bulls nowadays. Still, it’s on my radar. I do love baseball in general.
And I agree with some things I’ve read, such as, nobody is complaining about the times of the games here; that’s because they’re exciting as hell. Can 162 games all be that exciting? No, still, if you’re a baseball fan, what does it matter? I enjoy every minute of the game, and I’m enjoying this World Baseball Classic. If you haven’t already, I definitely recommend that you check it out. At the very least, to see what spectacular play Baez make next? Good luck Javy, just make sure to save some for us this year.

World Baseball Classic…WBC. Pretty damn good games so far. I have tuned in here and there, but I like the fact that they are later games. US, puerto rico, dominican republic, and venezuela…all 4 teams with some big league talent. The US and puerto rico move on. Baez playing for pr and doing it well is nice to see. Just dont get injured and bring that electricity to the Cubs when you get back. Not sure why others chose not to play, but to each their own. This wbc is kind of like the olympics, and it has definitely been exciting. The US plays japan tuesday night at 8. I hope to catch most of that game and look for a US W!
